GK-1EL (Entry Level) v. TLP
« on: 5 Sep 2006, 09:36 pm »
Hi Guys,

I have just been comparing the GK-1EL (Entry Level) to the TLP.  Apart from the manual switching board what are the differences between the two?  (I notice that the GK uses two valves rather than TLP's one.)  I am particularly interested in how the sonics compare as I am looking to partner my AKSA 100 Nirvana Plus.

Cheers,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the post, just to get the answers rolling, I will give you the technical differences.

The TLP uses two sections of one tube for both channels.  The GK1 uses two separate tubes;  one for each channel.  This gives better imaging performance because channel separation and power supply isolation is superior.

The TLP has no special tricks to give full range performance.  This compromises bass performance somewhat, as in most tube circuits.  The GK1 has a unique phase inverting circuit, solid state, which drives a drone, shunt regulator triode with a skewed frequency response to give superior bass control whilst conferring midrange warmth and the crystalline top end open associated with triodes.  There are separate power supplies - indeed separate transformers - for each channel, and this promotes channel separation and very strong imaging performance.

Really, although the basic circuit is similar, technically these two beasts are sonically chalk and cheese.

Cheers,

Hugh

Brian,
I have a TLP in my bedroom system and a GK-1 in my main system.  When I work on the GK-1 for several days, I'll often put the TLP in my main system to tide me over.

I could be a very happy man listening to the TLP.  In fact, I had the TLP in my main system for almost a year while the GK-1 kit sat in the box... I was enjoying the TLP music so much that I wasn't that interested in working on the GK-1.  Listening to the TLP, I have no sense that anything is missing or wrong.... it's very enjoyable indeed.  When I put the GK-1 back in, I hear a lot more detail.  I hear much more resolution in the "grunt" in a strongly bowed string bass, for example.

Both are lovely... but if the TLP is the prettiest girl in the villiage then the GK-1 could easily be Miss Universe.

Hi Brian,

Swift is a full feature/remote control pre amp. It's the retail product of the GK1 with few added modification, IIRC. Hugh may correct me on this one.

In other words , it's a Miss Universe in your lap. Plug and Play.

Hi Felipe,

Hmmmm, never think about that since my GK1 is already wearing nothing.
