Maynard Ferguson - M.F. Horn

For years Maynard Ferguson fans have been waiting for Sony to get off their rear ends and release CD versions of his classic recordings from the 70s.  Finally, Wounded Bird Records is now re-releasing many of Maynard Ferguson's classic recordings.  One of his best was M.F. Horn, aka  M.F. Horn 1.  The album was recorded in 1971, and I think it is one of his finest.

I have seen Maynard in concert three times: once at a small theater with his High Voltage band in the 80s, once with a jazz orchestra in the 90s, and two years ago with his Big Bop Nouveau band.  He sits down a lot during his concerts now, and he needs to have an assistant prepare his charts for each song, but I give him credit for giving the young players he tours with the same opportunity that Stan Kenton gave him in the 50s.

I used to listen to a cassette tape of M.F. Horn 1 & 2.  I played it so much that it is on its last legs now.  The cassette tape had no liner notes, so I never knew much about it except that the playing was exceptional.  I found out two interesting things from the liner notes: 1. the musicians were European, 2. all the smoking trombone solos are Maynard playing the valved trombone!

Prior to the reissued CD, I had been listening to a FLAC recording of the cassette tape made with my computer's analog input.  When I compared the new CD with my old recording, I realized that the pitch of the cassette recording was off by a 1/2 step due to the age of the tape and the low quality of my walkman!

The re-release of M.F. Horn sounds really good.  I have also picked up Carnival and It's My Time.  The former sounds good as well, but the latter isn't as good acoustically in my opinion.  Most of the music is focused on the center channel.

All in all, it's great to have CD versions of these old recordings.

As  high school trumpet players in the 70's we all tried to emulate Maynard. "MF Horn" is a great album but I wish they would release MF2 on CD.

This is great news. Right up there with remastering of the 60's Herb Alpert The Tijuana Brass catalog.  I have several of those MF Horn LPs from the early 70's.  Our high school jazz band played a lot of his charts in the mid 70's.  We had one excellent trumpet player that could hit a lot of the high notes ( I played trombone).

I saw him several times from the mid 70's to mid 80's. The last time was in a mall in Springfield, VA in 1985.

thanks for the info.

It's hard to say - maybe you could email Wounded Bird. I have a Billy Cohham disc that they released and the sound is pretty good.

    Maynard will surely be missed.

Fortunately, he has inspired many young people to learn and play brass instruments over the years. Has anybody here ever been to a marching band competition?- or better yet; to a DCI competition?

Maynard's style and his uncanny abilities to play all brass instuments- as well as design them- was truly awesome.

IMHO, the best jazz trumpet player that has ever lived.

Maynard was my wife's inspiration to take up the trumpet, and years later she was thrilled to have an opportunity to play with him in a supporting role (same with Thelonious Monk, but that's another story).  She gasped, "Oh no!" when I informed her of his death this morning.

    WEEZ -
I haven't made it to a DCI comp yet, but my wife has been to several.  Last Christmas her sister gave her a couple of DCI DVDs from a few years ago, and she loves 'em.  Her father was a trumpet-playing local band leader and high school band teacher, and together with her sister they led or assisted with many band camps through the years.

You ought to hear the stories about the various legends with whom he's gotten stinking drunk and/or stoned.  The list is impressive, and the stories are hilarious.

I understand there was a DCI in Murfreesboro a couple of years ago...did you attend?

    Yes I did!

This year, it was held right here in Cookeville @ Tennessee Tech, 'cause MTSU was re-doing their field. But guess what.... It was called due to rain!  :x

Double, if you've never been to a DCI show..well, it's hard to describe. Once you go; you're 'hooked'.  :D

When my kids were in high school, we attended at least two events every year. Travelled to the finals in Boston; Buffalo; Jackson; Madison; etc.

    Great fun.

Yeah, I think Kandy might actually prefer attending DCI competitions to concerts!  :o

She says the same about getting hooked.  I guess I'll have to make it up there one of these days.

    Sounds like a plan.  :thumb:

Just lemme know next time you hear about 'em coming to town.  Kandy tries to keep up with it, but you'll probably find out first.

I attended a DCI event back in the 80's. The wall of sound was amazing and I couldn't listen to my system (KEF 101 mini-monitors / M&K Volkswoofer sub) when I returned home

I had a chance to see Maynard and his big band back in the mid-70's as well as Big Bop Noveau in the late 80's. As a trumpet player we all tried to emulate him.
