RM30m Dynamic Range....is it real?
« on: 16 Aug 2006, 12:38 am »
It's taken about 90 days, but I've finally found "the" location for my RM30's.  The placement choice and the installation of balanced cables between the McCormack ALD and the Muse 175's occured about the same time.  With the balanced cables the sound is much more alive, in touch and speedy......how's that for a wordy description of my audio perception?  No tradeoffs.  No loss of info...just friggen better, and I love it.

So funny that my SO is now really pissed-off because the dynamic range of the RM30's REALLY show's the of the dynamic range changes across TV channels and commercials which are truly quite offensive.  The RM30's do ask a bunch of their amps, but when those amps can respond...it'll scare the shit outta ya.  Keep in mind my SO has been listening to these speakers for 2 months or so.  The obvious improvements achieved with positioning and cabling are nothing short of amazing.

FWIW, I was watching "The Incredibles" with the kids last night.  The rumble from the SAM's fired at Elastigirls aircraft made both me and my kids jump.  The friggen couch was moving.   Whacannisay.....if it's there the RM30's will pump it into the room.

Listen, share and enjoy.

Did you ever look at the speaker placement guides at Cardas & Immedia?

Overall, I'd rate my RM30C's w/ sub similar in jump factor & dynamic slam to my friend's great horn-loaded systems, such as his grey-market (Asian import) JBL K2 system (export only, dual 12s & a horn, around 100dB sensitivity, about $20k in Asia).

For some time my 30s were high-passed & powered by a 400WRMS/ch Sunfire.  The volume lagged a bit when the volume-up button was depressed a long time.  Once, when the level finally caught up, the volume was so loud (w/ absolutely no audible distortion) that the remote flew out of my trembling hands.  The high & pure undistorted SPL caused physical fear.  I crawled on my hands & knees to pick up the remote from the floor & found the mute button.  My breathing was labored.  I efforted to relax & made a mental note not to do that again.

A few days later someone else made a similar mistake.  That person handed me the remote w/ an ashen face & said they didn't want to control that system.  The 30s set up properly IMO will absolutely pass the threshold of pain w/ no audible distortion whatsoever.

I have found the same dynamic properties you mention.  I have heard the RM30's played so loud I couldn't beleive it, with no perceptible distortion.

As long as your amp has the ability to supply the voltage swing needed to send a clean signal, the RM30 will be a champ at reproducing it.
