In Wall really Hiddenites
« on: 17 Jul 2006, 10:17 pm »
I am considering building in walls for my HT room for a number of aesthetic and practical reasons.   Most commercial offerings, even most of the best, don't include an enclosure, which gives a number of potential problems (unpredictable bass response, rattles, etc.).  Those that do are often cost prohibitive (such as those from Triad).

So, I am considering the DIY route. One strong contender is using a variation of the Hiddenite, due to its friendly impedance (my Yamaha YPAO receiver needs 6-8 ohms) and low cost, and excellent off-axis response.

Other alternatives might include the Tanzanite or SA-1, because the limited narrow vertical dispersion would be fine for a seated position in the room typically, and might actually make the roon easier to tune.

I will simultaneously be installing sound treatment panels/bass traps.  Use of an adjacent attic will allow unrestricted cabinet depth, at least for the center and L/R, and also a corner loaded sub of unrestricted size.

One of the main problems I am having is finding grilles.  I would like to either get perforated metal grilles like those typically found on inwalls, or some grille that would be elegant in design and could be appreciated as a visual design element in the room.

Has anyone here used any of Rick's designs in such a way?  I would like to use one of these as I feel they are an excellent value. :thumb:   Any recommendations or input appreciated.

Marbles used one of Rick's custom designs in wall so he may comment. I have the Hiddenites and am very happy with them. As you mentioned the dispersion is excellent.

As for grills I did a custom install exactly as you mentioned in a friends home with a false wall. I used the same molding that he had in the rest of his house and just used spay glue to attach grill cloth to it. The result was very nice.

See the left and right speaker grills below:

Rick's in-wall speakers are very nicely made.  I had to get different sizes because on the one wall the studs were normal..16" on center, but the other side was going in a closet under the basement stairs and the studs were closer together.  Rick made the baffles different sizes and it turned out very well.

I don't want to comment on their sound as I have only heard them as side surrounds in an HT setup, for that application, they work well.

I liked them enough I bought some matching Tanzanites as rear surrounds.

Brian, no problem at all....

Wow.  That really looks nice.  Well integrated with the room.  I particularly like what you did with the components flush mounted into the wall.  Did you use 19" rack, or just shelving?

Thanks for the rapid response.

Rick has been very patient thus far with my many questions.  Thanks for the use of your pics.  BTW, how much differnce do you notice between the flush mounted speakers, and the stand-alone Tanzanites?  What do you have for your front stage?

I really don't notice a difference between the inwalls and the Tanzanites, but the Tanzanites are used for rear surrounds and I am much less critical in my HT listening vs 2 chanel.

My fronts are Salk Sound HT3's and a Salk HTC.

Here are some pictures of them:

Yes, Rick has been great, and he's been recommended by several folks in the DIY community that I highly respect.  My biggest problem has been trying to decide which of his designs to use.  I wanted to use a design in the HT room incorporating the Dayton Reference drivers with a Seas tweeter, so the Hiddenites seem logical.  I also have an office/studio that I plan to equip with a very good set of monitors.  I am having a real problem deciding between the Tanzanites, the SSR, or possibly a version of the SSR using the AirCirc tweeter.  I have always wanted either a set of Scan Speak or Seas based monitors.  Decisions, decisions, decisions.  Any input, experience, or comparisons welcome.

I'm very impressed with the response to my maiden post.  Even though the number of posts here is not that  high, the rapid response tells me that enthusiasts of Selah products monitor the activity here often - a good thing.  Thanks! :P

Thank you! This room took days to complete but that is what friends are for I guess

We used a Mid-Atlantic rack that was fan cooled. You cannot even hear the fans from standing next to it. I wish Pro Audio amp manufactures would use fans like that.
