IA-7 and new Oppo Digital DV-970HD bundle

NuForce recognizes the exceptional audio quality of Oppo Digital's newest DVD player for DVD Audio playback, in addition to other outstanding features (for more information, go to www.oppodigital.com).  For a limited time (limit to 200 sets), every IA-7 comes bundled with a FREE Oppo DV-970HD.

When listening to DVD audio output on the DVD player, use the front L/R channels. Do not use the mixed output (doesn't sound good).

I checked with Casey and realized that he was key in influencing the design of Oppo DV-970HD. Here's what Casey has to say about the sound quality:

In comparing to one of the better SACD/CD player, the $3496 Marantz SA11S1, Oppo DV970HD came hair- closed to Marantz in SACD and CD playback.  Marantz was a tad more relax and expansive, but the Oppo hold its own and with plenty of PRaT (Pace, Rhythm and Timbre) that even Marantz couldn't quite match.  In fact, using a better audio interconnect could immediately tipped the scale towards the Oppo - it's that closed!   With a high-bit-rate DVD-Audio or DVD recording (96/24-bit or 192/24-bit), Oppo was in a class all by itself.

We think by accident :), Oppo DV-970HD has excellent audio output.

Having heard NuForce's in-house setup with the 970HD driving a P-8 and Reference 9SE, I completely agree: the Oppo is really something special. Not only does it play just about every video format on the market -- and off-market format as well, if you catch my meaning -- for us audiophiles it also plays SACDs! Don't confuse this with the 971, which doesn't sound all that great from its analog outs (its digital output is not much to right home about either, apparently): that player is slated to be updated, hopefully with the same kinds of improvements in the 970.

Too ironic.  I was just hunting for a low-cost 'disruptively' great price/performance digital source for my new P-8 / Ref 9's combo, and had  been looking at this unit before stumbling upon this thread.  I also found that Reference Audio Mods offers a pretty serious set of mods for the Oppo.  They look impressive, but cost 3-4x the price of the unit itself.  Curious if anyone's heard RAM's mods.

I was considering the modded Oppo, but based on everyone's feedback below, perhaps the price/performance of the stock unit is a better value...

Cheers,

It would be interesting to know how reliable it is.  The stock one is cheap enough to risk it but a £400+ modded unit is a different matter.

Has anyone else got one?  What is reliability like?  I think I'm interested enough to give one a try.

I just ordered one this morning, stock, from Oppo.  Turns out, I'm not far from their operation, its just down in Silicon Valley, and it arrives tomorrow morning!

I'm very interested to give it a go.  I'm out of town now, but returning home late Wednesday night to greet my Oppo, and newly arrived Zu Druid Mk4's to pair up with my Nuforce system...should be one heck of a weekend!

I'll report back after the break-in begins with a full review.

As promised, here's my brief review of the 970HD:

When the unit arrived, my HT Precision Link interconnects had not yet arrived, so I used the supplied interconnect, and popped in a gold remaster CD from my Sting collection.  I was reasonably impressed with unit.  It has a certain 'quietness' to it that really brings the music forward, and nothing else.  However, when I connected my HT interconnects a week later, the difference was significant.  The improvement was more than I would have expected in overall musicality and detail, detail.  The stock cable does look pretty wimpy but the size of the jump in improvement tells me that the unit is cable sensitive and responds exceedingly well to an upgrade there.  Even a $50 cable would likely make a very notable improvement in my opinion.

That said the sensitivity was such that by connecting it to my P-8 it introduced a ground loop hum into my speakers, determined to be coming from by coax/cable tv.  Remove the the coax from wall, hum goes away.  Or remove RCA from 970HD from pre amp (while cabletv is connected back), humm goes away.  So I routed the cabletv through my Monster HTS 3500 mkII power center, and it eliminated 90% of the hum.  Ear has to get very close to my Zu's to be able to hear that last 5%.  I might buy that high-end ground loop filter for $20 just to nip it in the bud in the future sometime.

As for reliability, it is more solid that I expected.  Especially for how damn inexpensive it is.  My HDMI LCD TV doesn't arrive for a couple more weeks, so I was light on being able to test many other disc formats.  I can say it is indeed a nice match for the Nuforce amps and pre, at a price that is great.  And nothing beats free, as Nuforce is offering with the IA-7.

Your cable hum problem can probably be fixed.  Try these links - particularly the Parts Express one.  This is a common satellite/cable problem.

Is there a forum for the Oppo unit that you supply?  I just bought one as a result of your recommendation (thank you v. much).  Fascinating thing; want to ask questions in the approriate place.
