I always thought these were cool and would love to have one in the corner of my office.  However the new ones are just cheap nostalgia crap.  I wouldn't dare put a record of any worth under the needle on one of these.  So I got to thinking that one could find a cool looking old suit case and just build their own.  Where to begin...

Budget $500

I already have an AMC pre-amp w/ phono that I could use.  I need a small amp though, tubes would be really cool but it needs to be small.

The TT section.  I was thinking a modified MMf2 table.  Anybody familiar with TT modifications?  Should I start hunting the thrift stores?

Speakers.  I'm thinking no crossovers.  Fostex?

Anyway I'm just opening this up for some brainstorming.  Maybe if enough of us are inteterested we could put together some plans.

If this just goes in the office, would a console speaker work????

I'd be tempted to go mono for this--put a single Fostex where the speaker is intended to go, remove the wooden top and put a piano hinge on it, put the TT under the hinged top??????

Would ONE of the ASL Wave amps suffice???
