Danny, the xo mods and parts for the magnepan smga are sweet.
Wow, my maggies grew balls!

Can you give some details?  I've got a pair of SMGa's circa 1989 that I've still got lieing around collecting dust.

12gauge aircore inductor and a stack of sonicaps.
125$

There is a great thread about the smga.

I can email you the order list if interested.

Interesting.  So was the final crossover design a single 78mH inductor and a 30uf cap?  Also, not sure if I missed it or not, but I didn't see how to modify the connections to the speakers themselves.  I'd definitely be interested in the parts list if you can PM them to me.

Did you also modify the mounting bracket (and speaker height/angle) as well or just do the crossover mods?

I don't know about changing out the values or doing any re-designing, but the parts quality can be brought up significantly. The resulting improvement is significant as well.

Let me know what you have, send a schematic, or something, and I'll recommend what to upgrade.

I used a 12g aircore inductor that Danny dewinged to suit.
Danny suggested a 3 cap combination to yeild the 50value.
I bypassed the fuse and resistor first and this opened the upper register up.

The link to the smga rebuild has a nice combination stand and xo box that I am going to employ.
His price is very reasonable.

I upgraded the crossover on a pair of 1.6's, and at a Houston Audio Society meeting we compared them to another member's stock pair. The difference was so great that after the comparison one member said "they aren't even the same speakers". Now the good news is the 1.6 has a simple 1st order tweeter, 2nd order woofer crossover that's easy to upgrade. Needless to say the new parts won't fit into the space occupied by the stock parts, so I placed them into a 6X8 plastic box from Radio Shack that I attached to the back of the speaker over the original crossover chamber. I've included a link to a schematic below. The woofer inductor is a 19ga iron core, which you should upgrade with a 12ga (same DCR as the iron core) Alpha Core. The woofer shunt cap is a mylar 25uF. You can take the stack of  Solens from the tweeter (22uF total), add a 3uF Sonicap to take it to 25uF, and use that in the woofer circuit. For the tweeter you can use whatever combination of Sonicaps Danny recommends that total to 22uF (e.g. 20+2+0.1).
