Replace my BK PRO10 sonata with a Tempest?
« on: 17 Jul 2006, 01:07 pm »
Hello,

Along with my Kharago mono specials and Magnepan MGIIIa's, I'm using a BK Pro10mc sonata. I like it very much, but have the upgrade itch. I was going to go tubes but decided for SS. So of coarse I want to look at the Tempest. I feel my pre is a top pre - separate power supply, good attenuators and switch's and well built and has good synergy with the Kharago's. I'm looking for opinions on getting a used tempest. Would this be a upgrade or lateral? Has anyone used or herd the BK comared to anything?

Thanks
Bob

Hey NJ Bob, i owned a Tempest and it was by far the best SS preamplifier ive ever had in my system but tubes bring thier own special Magic to the table.Odyssey power amplifiers sound great with a tube preamplifier. the Candela Was voiced using Odyssey /Symphonic Line Gear and is in fact designed specificaly to work well with SS power amplifiers.the Candela is made with top shelf parts and if i were you i would check one out. Tubes Rule!thanks....WCW III

I have had the Odyssey Tempest and Modwright SWL 9.0SE preamps in my system.  I always had a degree of harshness in my system with the Tempest.  Sound was a bit thin and soundstage and the images within it were on the small side.  I used it with the Extreme monos and a B&K ST2140 amplifier.  The Modwright is much better in all aspects, but it is about twice the price.  If you want to try something from Odyssey, I recommend trying the Candela instead of the Tempest.  I haven't heard it though.
