120 LP's from a friend..I had not heard most
« on: 21 May 2003, 03:05 am »
A friend of mine gave me his LP collection.  What makes it cool is that he was into southern rock, and CSYN and others I was not too into.

This gives me a chance to try out many selections that I had not heard much of in the past and would not probably buy in the future.

Dickey Betts is pretty cool..and Aretha Franklin is kicken ass right now!

Dude, that is nice.  You should hook him up big time.  You got some great music on your hands.  Clean those puppies up and sit back for some music from when they knew how to create!

Thanks guys...I softened him up the night before from a keg of micro brew I brought to a bon fire.

The hostess and my wife are good friends, and she left a message on our machine telling us to bring THE beer and she would have wine.

Hell I thought I was in charge of beer for everyone.  When I got there she said it was just supposed to be beer for Mrs. Marbles and me  :o

Needless to say everyone stopped drinking their bottled beers and started hitting the keg  8)

Anyway I will treat him right.  I now have a pony keg in my house and he will drink from it freely :-)

One problem I have is that I sent my phono pre back to Dusty at CI Audio to get upgraded to his latest (not out yet) VPP2 for low output moving coil cartridges.  It is being shipped back today, but I won't have it until the end of the week.

Sorry to de-rail your thread bud, but we haven't spoke in some time.

What are you running in your rig(s) nowadays?  I caught the phono stage, but what else is floating your 2ch boat?

Cheers,
Russ

No problem on the derail at all

Pre is a Bent Audio transformer based passive pre with silver transformers.

Amps are Symphonic Line Kraft mono 400's

Speakers are nOrh marble 9.0's

digital front end is a Sony DVP S7700 as a transport, modded by Dan Wright and then by Steve Nugent of Empirical Audio

DAC is an ART D/IO MENSA modded by Bolder Cables

Turntable is a Teres 265 (-)  with SME IV arm and Symphonic Line RG8 cartridge...This is a modded Van Den Hul Grasshopper.

All cabling except phono cable is Bolder Nitro.

Thank you...

I'm still awaiting the IRD active XO so I can bring stereo subs into the system and releive the woofers in the 9.0's from the low frequencies so that I get more tactile bass and a cleaner midrange.

I love the way the system sounds with concert DVD's via my pre/pro with the subs on, but this is not possible without an active XO in my 2 channel system.

After that I think I will be done for a while......ya right!!! :nono:

Marbles, your system must be something to listen to, and will be over the top once the subwoofer are added.  Did you try any cartridges other than the SL and did you end up with the Monolithic phono pre?

As an asidie, I'm moving back East and had to get rid of my fish tank.  As part of the deal, I'm getting what I hope is a mother lode of vinyl, which I know includes some great jazz (Miles, Monk, Coltrane), funk (Funkadelic) and classic rock.  I should be taking delivery this weekend and will let you all know the booty haul.

Beezer, I did not try any other cartridges.

I spoke to Klaus about the arm/cartridge combo and he told me he had a rebuilt RG8 for me at a very attractive price :-)

He told me that synergistically the SME arms match very well with that cartridge, and he liked the IV better than the V.

I bought a CI Audio VPP1 to go with my Sansui TT that has a MM cartride.
I also bought the upgraded power supply.  I really liked the combo.

I then used the VPP1 with the Teres, but lost some dynamics.  Wayne (Bolder) lent me a step up transformer that I liked a lot and the combo of the VPP1 K&K transformer was great.

I just sent back my VPP1 to be upgraded to the VPP2 phono pre for low output cartridges, and should have it in a day or two.  The VPP2 is not available commercially yet.

Speaking to Dusty, he told me that the CI Audio phono pre is + - .25 db over the entire RIAA curve, and that the Monolithic is + - .5 db

Congrat's on your vinyl haul...sounds GREAT!!!

I blanked on your phono preamp - you had already mentioned the CI upgrade.
