hi GHM
how would you describe the difference between the electro and the audio sector that you have?
is the electro more extended in the highs? i would think.
what about image density etc.?
thanks
malcolm
Hi Malcolm,
Yes the highs are a tad more extended on the electro. The image density and definition has more solidity. Some of this is due to the fact the AS DAC uses passive I/V conversion no OP AMPS. In order to get similar results I have to use a buffer between the Audio Sector DAC and the integrated with passive volume pot.
The Electro is more ballsy own its own than the AS in the same configuration. I'm curious as to what the voltage output is on the Electro..as it has mucho dynamic swing!!I get similar soundstage width and depth but only with the addition of the buffer. I can use the Electro without the tube buffer and not even consider using a tube buffer at all. It has a slightly more upfront sound than the AS DAC with crispier overtones. It is also much easier to distinguish instruments and voices.
Don't get me wrong the AS DAC is hella good well outside of its price range. Definitely not a match for the Electro own its own running through a passive volume control. Using an active volume control with high input impedance..things get a little closer.
When using a buffer, bass is about the same for each unit. The Electro wins over all in extened highs, separation and purity (being able to run it directly to the integrated). To be a upsampling DAC..the Electro has a very analog sound to it in my system. I like this as listener fatigue is my pet peeve. My upsampling Quad sounded good but nothing like this thing.
Damn !! I just bought myself a competition road bike yesterday. I'm almost ready to return it to buy a DAC like this!!

Oh well ..I needed to venture outside of audio and spend some money in another hobby. I can always dream though..maybe one day!
At more than ten times the price it better be good and it surely is !
