does absorption vary depending on diff shapes?

Better put. Would the absorption capacity of two panels be different? One panel 2' x 4' x 4" thick. The other 1' x 8' x 4" thick.

Snce the area is the same, intuitively the absorption should be the same.

Any thoughts from the pros?

I've gathered (read- I'm not clear on this ) that perhaps the difference in the low end between the fluffy 701 and the denser 703  might be a diaphragm' action of the panel. So that's a good question from a couple of directions. Would too narrow a strip hinder? Certainly not in the upper octaves though.

I think if we're talking about a panel held off from the wall so bass energy would be absorbed, these two would be quite different from mid bass on down.

Mike,

They would measure the same in an acoustics lab, but in practice they'll be different depending on how and where you place them in the room. For example, when mounted straddling corners having a width of two feet works better (absorbs to a lower frequency) than only one foot. But then again, having one wider panel in one corner might be less effective than two narrower panels in two corners because of the way bass propogates around a room.

So the real answer is it's not practical to compare these two options! :)

How they are built will change this also. If the sides are covered with wood then it would be totally different. 2 2x4 foot panels with covered sides would be much better then 4 2x2 panels with covered sides.
