These finishes (all stock finishes) are by Bud Bailey: lite oak, dark oak, cherry.

mls stock finish is Satin Black.

mls premium finishes are African Ebony, diamond piano black, and rosewood.

Piano black has always been the most difficult to produce.  Bud used a shiny black film from Japan applied over the MDF.  It looked nice but not as nice as a sprayed finish.  In sprayed finishes domestic paintshops are constrained by EPA guidelines.  Car paint (acrylic) over three coats of primer is typical, bu ...

and sometimes longer Brian if we are in a rainy season...

Our actual man-hours per cabinet would surprise all of you --- AND the actual "layer count" would astound...

I know of no other Piano Black (Diamond...) that looks as good as ours at this present time... I've seen most of them from Europe and not one of them is as beautiful... Of course I'm biased... but I did this to make THE BEST... We offer this level of finish to others, but frankly many of our OEM's will not pay the price... Brian has...

All the best...

So, from this, I assume the "SUPER DUTY" cabinets have additional bracing internally?

Yes, they have additional bracing and "slightly thicker" HDF (High Density Fiberboard)

I posted some pictures of the "thicker cabinet walls" here:

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=26035

If you look at the pics closely, you'll see that the baffles are "VERY" thick.

John... Please note two things here...

First... we use ONLY imported MDF. (cool)

and second... we use a "type" of mdf that is "higher rated" than what is normally used... This is not BS hype... but a fact. There are several levels of DENSITY (within the mdf) that are available... we use the MOST dense (not me... the mdf...  :D )...

This contributes to the overall performance and our ability to "work the finish" the way we like to do... all are important...

All the best...

BTW Folks...

Michael Mastin's comments about the type of Ebony we are using is SPOT ON...

Thanks Michael... We should have explained this better... This Ebony is in variant you spoke of... and it is indeed highly figured and veined as described...

All the best to you Sir...

Was looking for integrated amp to improve mid range...I foun
« Reply #29 on: 31 Mar 2006, 07:11 am »
Found a good integrated for the RM 30, which is the Bel Canto EVO 2i gen II  ( I do not represent or work for Bel Canto), I'm just a regular guy who loves audio.
I was begining to think the RM 30 was not the speaker for me. The mids sounded cold. analytical, irritating and anti-musical. Bass was lacking extension that I believe this sort of design should well be capable of. Especially since Mr. Cheney is known for making speakers that do offer true full range sound.
Happy to report that I am indeed keeping the RM 30's.   :D  The mids warmed , sweetened and bloomed. The bass..wow! Fantastic , extended, full , very easy to follow those bass lines. Dynamics are beyond any expectation. Not to mentioned the detail.
I would'nt have believed the improvement unless I had experienced it first hand. So what they say is very true about VMPS speakers...they will reveal what's upstream..
Now to try out the waveguides...can I order a pair and return them if they don't work out? I have dark oak finish...what waveguide might I use for this finish?

thanks a bunch!

Sorry all, but I knew Brian would come to his senses and he has. The special is now over and I will post the new pricing for "upgrading to the Incredible SUPER DUTY MLS cabinets.
 ...

OK here is how it works.

As usual economics and business sense has reared its "little" head   and it makes more sense to "package" the New MLS Super Duty Cabinets with the CDWGs they were shipped with.  99% of you are also going to be adding the CDWG and such at the same time.

The "extra" cost for the incredible Diamond Finish Piano Black, has also made it nessessary to put it "slightly" above the AE and RW premium finishes.  This adjustment is also in effect for new speaker orders not placed as of today.

Also the cabinet finishes are not all priced the same so, congratualtions if you have your deposit in for the aforeposted short lived special, but now here is what we have.

You get the following:

    *RM30 SuperDuty Cabinet
    *CDWG
    *Specific Passive Radiators
    *X-over adjustment
    [/list:u]

All for $650 per cabinet with the exchange of your old cabinet

Then add the following for the finish:

Satin Black = No Charge Stock Finish
    Rosewood = $50 per cabinet
African Ebony = $50 per cabinet
Piano Black = $100 per cabinet

(If you don't send your old cabinet back add $100 core fee.)

You had me scared for a second John with the bright read header.  650 per cabinet for all that is very reasonable.  The cabinets alone are worth that.  I've been buying furniture lately and the quality of the MLS cabinets from a store would be at bare minimum 500 a piece, if you also consider the labor to move drivers, mod the crossover and add the waveguides it's obviously still a very good deal.

Anybody who hasn't seen the fit and finish of MLS cabinets should see if they can look at someone else's Vmps speakers or one of Mark's AV123 speakers, no less than high quality furniture grade stuff.  I should thank Brian for getting me to go for the Rosewood as I had originally wanted dark oak.  I've owned five other Vmps speakers in oak without any problems but the MLS cabinets are in an entirely different league.

Please keep us updated on the recent shipment.

    Cabinet swap "PROMO" now over
The Cabinet Upgrade/Swap "PROMO" pricing is now over and we will have "LIST Price", for that upgrade.

    It is as follows:

$600pr for the cabinet swap in the Satin Black finish.

$800 in the other finishes (Rosewood and Ebony)

$850 for the Diamond Finish Piano Black

Labor for the upgrade is $80 for disassembly/reassembly for speakers updated at the factory.
It takes 6 manhours to do the work.

This will also include doing the passive EQ which most of you have probably read about which is quite time-consuming.

Brian takes each pair to his soundroom and spends at least an hour dewinding coils one turn at a time and adding caps one very small value at a time.
