BESL owners in the SF Bay Area?
« on: 10 May 2006, 06:12 pm »
Hi there, I am looking into the BESL speakers from Phil.
I live in the SF Bay Area and was wondering if there is anyone around the neighborhood that has or owes some BESL Speakers and are willing to let me come to listen to them.  I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
T

PS-I am interested in the Series 5MTM / XLS Sub but will listen to any of the BESL Speakers to get a feel of the voicing.

Can't help with the BESL stuff, but if you're in the Bay Area, I can strongly suggest you make a trip up to Walnut Creek and visit Stereo Unlimited. Real nice folks, and they do indeed have something for just about everybody.

If you head out to sea from SF and go about 2047 nuatical miles on a heading of 251.7 degrees, you will end up in Honolulu.  That's where my Besls are.  Mine are a pair from a 1999 design, now discontinued I believe.  They are the 4.5 series, if memory serves me correctly, with two 8545 Scan Speak mids and a 9300 (or 9500) tweeter per side.  They do image well and have a very full midbass (which is why I chose them.)  The designer recomemds these not be used with a sub.  One thing I know about these for sure, they require GOOD amplification.  By good I mean plenty of current and no weaklings need apply.  But with powerful amps (I bi-amp mine) Michael Tilson Thomas and his band are more than happy to visit my livinng room.  The cellists, & upright bassists are more than present, which is exactly the sound I was looking for when I bought 'em.

Thanks, but that's a long ways away.  I talked to Phil too and he still has a pair of the 4.5s out there.  I love the scans speak drivers and was considering them, but I have the Shearwaters and they go low enough, just need a couple of more octaves and some more meat i nthe mid-lower bass.  I would love to get to Honolulu to visit and listen, but that will have to wait.  Thanks for the offer!!!

I am going to demo the 5MTs and if I like the voicing, I think I am going for the whole shabammm the 5MTM and the XLS sub!!!!

Any other BESL owners out there?

Sonny;

How are you planning on amping the BESL set-up?  I've heard that they need 6 channels when using the 5MTM/XLS set up.  Are you going to get the Behringer they sell, and/or...

or...
I am going to work with Phil to do a passive/active filter for the low pass.  It'll be a combination of attenuators to control the loudness of either the 5MTM or the XLS sub, whichever will be louder and then some passive inline filters for the sub...
Phil said this was a good way to do it. I wanted to get away from using active crossover equipment, such as the Berhinger or the like.  I want to get the pure sound... not electronized sound.  Its been my approach for so long...I've even tried not to use subs, but consider the 5mtm and xls sub as its really one system...
where are yo located? have you heard the BESL speakers?
