I would second Parnelli777's recommendation with the addtion of one thing and that would be a Behringer 2496 digital equalizer. One of the difficulties of mating a speaker like a Maggie, in particular, with a sub has been trying to achieve a seamless integration. The Behringer will allow you to achieve that. Of all of the speakers I have owned the only one I regret selling was a pair of Magneplaner SMGa's. I think you would be very happy with the 1.6.

I agree with Krull...if your budget tops out at $2500, I'd be all over the Orions.

If I didn't already have two pairs of speakers on order, *I'd* buy 'em, just to satisfy my curiosity.

I'm fascinated with dipole designs, especially using conventional moving coil drivers. Here's a link to a members thread on a pair he built with the help of Rick Craig. Have no idea of cost. Would love to hear them!

If you're ever in the neighborhood, feel free to stop by .

Rick is planning to offer something similar but with ribbon tweeters and aurasound 10 or 12" woofers. Driver and crossover cost of mine was ~1450, but i had ~150 in sonicaps added in. I think he's looking to offer the more permanent version in kit form in the 1500-1800 range. Of course, rick would probably be happy to design anything you want.

gitarretyp,
Thanks for the offer. Never been to Texas but I would be tempted to make the trip just to hear those! A really beautiful looking speaker, you did a great job. That will be a heck of a deal if Rick can sell those in kit form for the price range you mentioned. If I was in the market for new speakers I think I would wait and see what he comes up with.

At the risk of being self-promotional, if you are open to monitors, check out these:

M&K MPS-2510 Reference Monitors

The suggested price for these is $900 each, but you can typically find them through a pro dealer for about 20% off. I recently replaced a pair of Spendor S8e ($3K/pair) with them. Add $450 for Sound Anchor adjustable studio stands and you'll be amazed at the sound quality.

They require a subwoofer, but that can be added later. I'm using an M&K MPS-5310 with an M&K LFE-4 bass management controller. I can not recomment M&K products more highly.

I would second the Orions. This is a VERY good implementation, for OB. Most people have an epiphany when their ears get wrapped around the dipole thing. The DarkStars are a variation of the Orion theme. $2500 will land you with a finished pair of the Orions. You will never look back.

ummm ... anyone remember Merle, or the purpose of this topic?

What have we here, 50 different suggestions of the "best" speaker?

Could it just be that it doesn't matter all that much what you choose?

Which sounds better, a piano or a trumpet?
