... with their still-inflated market cap?

HMV - Now 'partnered with' Amazon. Even worse search engine than standard amazon; not that it matters because it's the same shitty selection.

CD Now - also subsumed. It wasn't great, but it was better than the awful over-personalized Amazon.

Why the hell would I want them flashing adds at me to add another handset to my Siemens phone when I'm looking for the re-release of Karajan's '63 Beethoven cycle? (which they don't have)

Where the hell am I supposed to buy CD's now? (aside from my neighborhood's relatively bountiful used shops)

CD Now had some incredible discounts. I was sad to see them go the route they did

I cancelled my last order with Amazon.com

I ordered a bunch of CD's, with the longest "usually ships in 8-11 days." All of which, whilst not mainstream, are not exactly "rare".

To cut a long story short, they ended up cancelling some of my orders after 2 weeks, as they said they couldnt find it, and delayed the shipping times by up to 3 months, at which point I cancelled it. Almost every time I checked my email I was getting news that one of my CD's was delayed.

Basically, they list every product in the world, hence the "worlds biggest selection", but when you actually order things, they dont have them.

Their selection is bad. B - A - D bad. If they don't even have all of it, that's pathetic.

Why didn't some Wall St. I-Banker-turned-netrepreneur figure this out earlier? "It's going to cost us millions of dollars to stock all this crap... How are we going to pay for that if we're not turing a profit? ... "

In Europe I can easily order from Amazon.com, which is good for some things.

I tend to use Bol.com (local NL site) and www.play.com for DVD and CD.

So far not too drastic consolidation over here.
