Can a Preamp have to much gain
« on: 21 Apr 2006, 09:52 pm »
I notice that I cant leave my volume up all the way on my BK Pro10 sonata, when using my volume control on my CD player or digital source.

I have to turn it back to about the 3 oclock point or i start getting thumpong noises even at low volume. The praamp has 14 volt max output and I was wondering if thats the reason.

You're probably overloading the input of the pre with your digital source(s). However, I DO think that some pre-amps have more gain than is necessary. 12db is probably enough..maybe less if there is no phono pre in the system.

Depends on the amp gain, and/or speaker sensitivity, room size, volume levels required, etc. etc. .....

32db of gain TOTAL is sufficient for most installations.

YMMV..
