Biamping passive xo....pros/cons???
« on: 12 Apr 2006, 02:54 am »
I am undergoing a major system overhaul which will include introducing a new pair of 2-ways rated 85db 1w/1m @ 4ohm load into my system.  The tweeter in this speaker is crossed in the neighborhood of 1K Hz and I would like to be assured that I provide the proper amplification that this system needs.  I will have a very large listening room somewhere in the area of 1200sq.ft.  I listen at moderate to slightly loud level, if this means anything.  I currently own two Odyssey Khartago stereo amps which Klaus will be converting to upgraded monos but my thought of the day is why not biamp with 4 monos?  Can anyone tell me pros and cons to this approach besides the obvious $$$ factor.  I do not believe I can go active XO with this system yet.

Thanks

Now all of the above info notwithstanding, when I built my speakers I worked with the actual driver designer for a while (Nick at lambda) and he told me without reservation that bi-amping was not only not needed but might actually sound worse than the passive XO solution we were using. I think it depends greatly on the loudspeaker. Mine are parallel very high efficiency mid-woofers with a constant directivity horn, with an efficiency better than 92dB/W/m.  With your lower-efficiency speakers you might well benefit from the bi-amped approach.
