Does my new Sharp projector suck or what?
« on: 2 Mar 2006, 10:31 pm »
Since the Infocus projector at work kept blowing a bulb every 6 months, we decided to get a new projector.

We went with one of the top selling conference proejctors according to Projector Central, a Sharp XR-10X DLP Projector.

It is either broken or just plain sucks. When projecting text from a laptop it looks like one is trying to project a 1024x768 resolution image through a 680x480 resolution projecctor.  The tops and bottoms of text lines are cutoff. The chararcters have jagged edges and varying thicknesses.

I called Sharp tech support and they said that if images look OK (they appear to be fine) then the projector is working properly and there is nothing that can be done.

Has anyone had experience displaying text (Power Point Presentations) on a Sharp XR-10X or other DLP projector and if so have they experienced the same problem. Is this typcial of DLP? Are they all poor performers with text?

For comparsion I borrowed an Infocus LP540 and the difference is enormous if not downrigh disturbing.

Try adjusting the output of your desktop/laptop's video card to match the native resolution of the projector. My laptop allows me to run one resolution on the laptop's screen, and a different resolution on the outboard monitor or projector.

The output of the video card should always be matched to the resolution of the projector for best results.

What to do now?

UPDATE:

Sharp graciously offered to take a look a the projector to make sure it is functioning properly, so I sent it back to them but prior to doing so, I found someone with the same model, so I did a head to head comparison to see if my unit peformed differently than theirs or if it display of text was an issue with this model.

The picture quality of the other same model projector was so much better. Characters were crisp and even with no varying line thickness.

So I figured it would be a slam dunk to get the performance of my unit improved...

WRONG

Sharp is telling me my projector is fine, (they said by not using the keystone I might get a better text quality).

Needless to say I am not happy about this. Does anyone have ideas on how I can get this resolved satisfactorally? My thought at this point would be to place a call with the VP of customer service and to encourage them to help me out.
