Love punchy bass.. .which 2-channel amp?
« on: 26 Mar 2006, 12:54 pm »
I love listen to punchy/tight bass, but also expect an amp to perform well in some other areas. Right now I'm using a Creek 4330 to power a pair of Kef 104/2 (4ohm) and a powered subwoofer.  It doesn't seem like the Creek is producing as much bass as I'd like comparing to my older set up with an Anthem PVA2 amp which I already sold.  My budget is up to $1000 and I actually prefer to buy used stuffs.  Can you guys recommend me a good stereo amp?  TIA

Sunfire (original)
Forte 4A
Odyssey Stratos

All will be a big step up from the Creek.

The Belles 150 HOTROD right now in Audiogon seems like a potential match.
DNA 125, if you can find one used.

I say DNA.  the Stratos I have heard sounded a bit dark, making things a tiny bit sluggish....something that is No No for PRAT.  Actually, I compared someone who had a Stratos and a Nait integrated, the Stratos was slow.

How's the BASS response on the DNA 125? Also, how much is a good price for a used DNA 125?

Be sure to audition the Naim Nait 5i.  It's a great little amp. If your tastes in music run towards jazz, acoustic and rock, you'll be very happy.

Van Alstine's Omegastar solid state amps have an absolute death grip on the bass. Extremely tight and controlled. Best I have heard and great sounding amps overall.

The new DNA 125, I think costs about $1500 more or less.  An used one might go between $900-1000, but they are rare in the market.  If you can push the limit of what you want to spend, maybe look into the larger, more powerful brother, the 225, can be had for less than $1500 (cost $2800 new.)  The best part of this amp, both the 125 and 225 is that they give you an option of upgrading to become one of the finest SS out there, when the time comes.  Many, many people are very happy with the older and new models in their stock form.

The Nait 5i is also a screaming bargain, but if you want absolute, tightfist control of the Kefs, perhaps eventhough the naim 50 watts seems pratty enough, it might not be sufficient to really be in control.

The DNAs sound very pratty, fast, and fairly neutral to the source, without being cold or clinical, something of a feat in itself.

Having a op chip based monoblocks as my reference now, I would tend to agree with Maxwalrath, BUT

having ran a pair of sort of mid sensitivity 89 db monitors with a passive subwoofer module that dips at the absolute minimum to 5.9 ohms, the Op chips did not have the power to drive them in any sense.

The Naim 5is did.
The DNA 225 whips them into shape producing good tunes.

of course, all these things are lose suggestions, you need to actually go out there and listen to some of these amps and if you like them, go for a decently priced one in Gon.  Repeat, the 125 are rare in the used market (must be really incredible) but the 225s are readily available.

I have not heard the Van Alstine amplifiers, but they do seem to have their supporters.

Good point...the lower powered chip amps don't give you the flexibility of the others. My only experiences are with a small Omega speaker and a 89dB Meadowlark Kestral2 with an easy impedance load. If your speakers aren't a very easy load, or if you are swapping them in and out, you should probably ignore the Patek suggestion.

At around $1000 I think that you cannot go wrong with either a used Aragon 8008BB, they may be a little pricey these days, or a used BAT VK200 solid state amplifier.  The Aragon is little soft on the high end, but is a monster bass control amplifier.  The BAT VK200 is better on the top end and is a great bass control amplifier, just not as vice grip like as the Aragon.

Both are great amplifiers from quality manufacturers that should last a lifetime.

Hope that was helpful.

My first choice was DNA-125, but it was hard to find so I ended up with a used HCA-2.  Thanks a lot for your inputs.  Now I need a pre-amp (SS/tube) with a budget around $600. Any suggestions?

You may want to look for a used Aragon 4004 or an 8008.  Very good bass but they run a bit hot because they are class A.
