Effect of plugging the port on AV2?
« on: 24 Mar 2006, 03:04 pm »
Hi Guys,

I had to plug the port on my center channel AV2 due to mounting it in the ceiling at an angle. Could someone please describe the effect that will have on the speaker? I expect it will just cut off the low end extension. Anyone know how much? Will it cause other undesireable effects? I haven't really listened to the system yet with it plugged and want to know if I'd need to build a different enclosure to get the best performance or maybe move the port so it can fire into the room.

I talked with Danny about this a while back but can't find the email :(

Thanks.

I am sure you will be fine with the port firing into the attic. No isssue at all as far as I can see.

Well, part of the reason I plugged it is because of bees and mositure and I wanted to protect the speaker. Maybe I'm being stupid....

Also, I was also interested because for WAF I might have to put my mains close to the wall and possibly in a cabinet type enclosure. If so I would think plugging the port would be necessary. Will venting the port into the attic be better than plugging it? I'd prefer to keep the port and maybe even move it to the side of the enclosure so it is firing down inside the room.

Anyway, I guess my main question is: How will sealing the port affect the speaker?

Opinions?

Hi Darren,

This is what you can do.

Go to a local fabric store and see if they will give you an empty cardboard holder from a bolt of fabric (make sure you measure your ports’ inside diameter). They usually come in different diameter sizes and are about 45” long.  The lady gave me a couple of different sizes.  Cut off a three-inch piece.  Then go to Wal-Mart or other inexpensive department store and purchase some children sized black nylon socks to wrap over the empty cardboard holder and tie a knot on the unused portion of the sock, which you place in the port first.  And, if you want to experiment, you can actually stuff the holder with some poly-fil to adjust the amount of bass loss you will experience.  I bounced this off of Danny a while ago and it will not harm the drivers.

Good luck.  Oh yeah, explain the comment about bees getting inside your house and possibly getting inside the speaker?? :?   Where do you live??

Bees in the house question...

Not actually in the house. My center is mounted in a 45 degree portion of my ceiling so the port is actually in my attic where bees sometimes get in. No actually in the house :)

See my other thread for pics of what I am talking about:

Hi Darren,

I see what you mean about possible bees (or spiders and other criters) getting inside the port.   My idea will work and won't detract from the sound, especially since you don't need to stuff them. Make sure the plugs fit snuggly in the port before final placement.

I like the idea of the center speaker being located up in the tray ceiling.  Oh yeah, a 15" Quad IB bass does equate to unnatural bass needs.

Will you be cutting a hole for the bass too?

Happy listening,
Lou

Yes, there will be a 14.5" square hole in the ceiling just above the plasma where the IB will go.
