Bryston 3B for biamping bass section of RM40s?
« on: 17 Mar 2006, 02:17 pm »
To all,

Is the Bryston 3B at 250 W / channel at 4 ohms a good amp for biamping the bass section of the RM40s.  The Bryston would run off a NAD C372 integrated amp.  The amp section of the C372 (160 W/channel @ 4 ohms) would be used for the midrange/treble array.

Please give any feedback.

Thank you,

John

P.S.  I can't use the larger Bryston due to size limitations.

Hello John,

I'd say that among 626R, RM2, RM30 and RM40, RM2 is most demanding in bass and needs an amplifier with excellent control. But that does not always mean more and more power. With RM2 I once used custom A-Class Mini Alephs monos with only 15W per channel. They could not play as loud as I wanted, but were surprisingly loud and with excellent sound throughout the range. This also applies to another custom single-ended solid state amplifier with some 2x 25 W. So in my experience you don't have to go to extremes in power, but extremes in quality will certainly be rewarding. The best amplifiers I listened to with VMPS, mostly with RM2 and RM40 were not more powerful than some 150 W or so per channel.

It should be more than strong enough to control the bass section of the RM40's.  I'm using an Acurus a250 which is also 250 W and it nearly makes the RM40's hop off the floor if I'm not careful!
