I would appreciate hearing from owners of SET amps on their experience of hum levels. My questions are: How far do you have to put your ear from the speaker to not hear any hum? How sensitive are your speakers? What amp do you have? How do you feel about how hum affects your listening enjoyment.
I am currently doing a study on hum output levels and how to minimize them. I have seen popular amplifiers that specify hum levels of 0.002 volts (2 mV.). In my estimation that is about 4 times what we should put up with. I can't imagine being able to enjoy music on a sensitive speaker with that going on. A long time ago I set 1 mV as a maximum hum for my 100 watt amplifiers. For my 35 watt amplifier I reduced that to .35 mV. Does anyone out there have some numbers to share or their experience in this area.
