I have a friend who is looking for a set of headphones to do video sound editing.
He has a 200$ budget and wants to try before buying.
Fittment and wearability are as important as sound quality for him.
He wants to do this in the bay area.
I look forward to your suggestions.

AKG has recently brought out their K601 and K701 models.  Both of these are more than $200.  But the good thing is their excellent K501s have become really cheap.  You can get some for about $125, if you find the right deal.  They're well known for their exceptional midrange.  They're often identified as having slightly light bass, but depending on what he's mixing, that may not be a big deal.

They are open, though...that may not be good for him.

Sennheiser HD580s are also a good bet, probably for around $150.  And you can often find the HD600s for close to $200, especially if you buy lightly used ones on head-Fi.

head-Fi is your best resource for headphone info though.

Hi,

Not in SF area. But just want to pass this on to you. J&R in NYC is having sale on Sennheiser phones.

595 for $200 I think

600 for $250

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4506

And plus free shipping!

Oh! by the way I don't own Sennhieser can. My brother used to own a lower end Senn model... about $80 and my friend own a pair also forgot the model. They sound pretty good.

And for myself I owned a pair of Grado SR60 since 1996!

Take care,

If you join on head-fi, I think there are a couple of sponsors there who will give you one-time discounts (Headroom, I think, and Todd The Vinyl Junkie).

Depending on the mixing environment your friend uses, he might want closed phones.  Might be worth looking at Audiotechnica ATH900s (very comfy by all reports, and they look pretty sexy too).  There's also a closed AKG headphone that comes in around the $200 mark, the K271S (the S is for "studio").
