Fostex F200A Based Singular Speaker

I would like to hear from anyone who has experience with this setup. I have always been fascinated by this combination and would like to get some idea of what it is capable of. Also, can anyone suggest a better cabinet arrangement for this driver than the Singular box? I would probably also use some type of super tweeter with this setup. This will be my fisrt foray into single driver speakers.

Thanks.

I have looked at that page before.  No experience with it, but a lot with the F200A.  Should you get around constructing it, I doubt you would feel the need of a supertweeter or tweeter in general.  They go up very high, without help.

The other doable or done for you cabinets that do justice to these drivers are the Bob Brines FTA-2000s.  Very heavily built, imposing, with a sound that would make your jaws drop at the weight, speed and intensity of presentation.  I have them, so do at least 3 other people across the country.  Worth every single penny...something that I can not say about the majority of speakers out there.  It beat almost every single commercial speaker I have heard in my life (Gershman, Infinity Kappa 9, Omegas, SAP, Aerial...)

Bemo has pretty much said it all. I also have no experience with that cabinet and also have the FTAs as Bemo. As he has stated an added tweeter will most likely not be needed. They cover the hearing range very well.

I'm not sure of your tastes in music. This will be the major factor on whether any single driver can work for you. If you listen at levels of above 100 db  or better you may want to look else where. There's only so much any SD can do. That being said the FTAs aren't perfect , but also aren't your average SD by a mile. In fact they make many SDs I've heard in the past sound like toys.

As Paul also mentions ...in all the speakers I've spent time with in my system and in other local audiophile's systems. I've heard nothing like the F200As in a well implemented TL design. They really train your ears to pickup on the deficiencies in a lot of commercially designed speakers.

Features like driver integration, bass integration/quality and timing become easily detectable once you live with speakers similar to these.

This is why my speaker search has come to an end, after going through the speaker swap for several years. If your taste fit the profile. Speakers like these can become a permanent part of the system for many years.

Good luck with the project!

They are big on Fostech, CSS, and other full range drivers.

All the normal single driver qualities apply:  coherency; direct driver/amp connection (active design); ideal point source for proper imaging.  But the F200A is the only true full range driver I've found as it is rated 30 - 20,000 Hz.  Without this driver I would have had to compromise and gone with a smaller extended range driver of some sort and added a sub.

The F200A is a wonderful driver and can be used in a multitude of ways including open baffle or bass reflex.  Like most extended range drivers ultimate output is limited (as mentioned above) but is adequate for any life like reproduction of unamplified music.  It is very detailed, but even more so, it is musical which helps make all my music sound better.

The highs do beam, but even nearfield (as I listen to them) you have to be leaning way over to the side to really notice.  The effect does not seriously impose itself on you for casual listening and can actually help with room interaction concerns or fine tuning frequency response (yes some have said they might have too prominent of treble response!).

Sound from the Bob Brines FTA-2000 does not resemble any other single driver speaker I've ever heard.  The bass is deep, full, and overwhelming in comparison.  No sub needed for music, unless you listen to tons of large pipe organ stuff.  Unlike other 8 inch Fostex drivers or Lowthers the sound is not thin and there's no midrange shout.

Bob offers them as plans, pre-cut panelized kits, raw cabinets ready for finishing, or fully assembled:

Hi Bemopti123,
I've been talking to Gmood1 at Audiogon about the Fostex and he mentioned your system. Any chance of letting me hear your Fostex? I am in CT and looking to upgrade from my small single driver setup.
Thanks,
Chuck
