What did I do? SB3/Slimserver
« on: 26 Feb 2006, 07:29 pm »
My Squeezebox was working great using 6.2.1 firmware 28.  Then I tried to use firmware 15 by replacing the firmare 28 file with 15.  Now my Squeezebox won't connect to Slimserver.  I reinstalled 6.2.1, but it still doesn't work.  Why can't my SB3 connect to Slimserver anymore?  The SB3 prompted me to enter an IP address for the server.  What do I use?  How do I reset the player to its default settings?

Thanks

Did you shut down slimserver before changing firmware and were you prompted to upgrade the firmware on the Squeezebox after doing so? (On the SB2 you are prompted to hold down the brightness key to upgrade, I'm guessing it's the same for the SB3). As far as the ip address, normaly the SB defaults to obtaining one automatically. You can find your servers ip address, and other required info for using an static ip by typing "ipconfig /all" (no quotes) at the command prompt on your computer/server. It is highly recommnded that you set static addresses for your SB, computer/server, and access point. To reset your SB unplug the power, plug it back in and press "add" on the remote. Also, check your MAC address under information->player information. Make sure it matches the MAC address printed on the lablel on the back of your SB. A bug in the 15 firmware can cause your players MAC address to change.
A lot of info but it covers most anything that I can think of that might be causing your problems.

My MAC address was incorrect.  Somehow my WPA security was messed up too.  After I fixed both of those problems, it worked.

I noticed that the SB3 IP address that was obtained when I was having the issues was different than what I am used to seeing.  After I fixed the issues, it looked familiar again.

Is it easy to use a static IP address?  How do I do that?

Thanks for your help.

pugs,
The MAC address bug with the 15 firmware seems to happen rarely but it did happen to me once. However, I'm still running 15 with no problems.
To set  up static ip addresses open the command prompt on your computer and type "ipconfig /all" (no quotes).  Write down the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server info and then go to the Squeezebox and go thru the set up networking routine and choose "specify a static IP address". Copy the info you got from your computer exactly except the ip address which should be higher than the one for your computer. So if your computers IP is, for example, 192.168.1.101 make the address for the SB 192.168.1.103. Make your routers address 192.168.1.102 and you should be in business. If you have other computers on your network check their addresses first to make sure that there are no conflicts (same address).
Glad to be able to help.  :D

when and where does the SB ask for your router address.  I never noticed I had to set that part up.

In the initial set up screen(s) you will be prompted to " obtain an IP address automatically". You can use the remote to scroll the screen up or down to see your other options. It is not the router address but the server address that it will ask for.
