Basic Power Supply NOW discontinued
« on: 17 Mar 2006, 08:04 pm »
After all the comments about the Ultimate PS and the upgraded Deluxe PS, I have decided to stop offering the "Basic" power supply

I will still honor all orders that have been placed.

The sound of the power supplies built with Jensen caps are quite a bit more "natural" sounding.

It also takes me a VERY long time to build the Basic PS and it is a large part of why there is such a long delay to get mods.

I will offer a "Superior" PS built with Jensen caps in a very nice Aluminum case starting at about $600.00 in the coming months.

I am also looking into a  linear PS to suggest for a lower cost upgrade from the stock supply.

Thats perfectly understandable and for what you get $600.00 looks fine to me.  I am looking at getting one once certain financial issues are sorted out.  However I will be looking, at least intially, at feeding it into the digital of an XR55.  I know Wayne has a sytem setup using an XR55.  I wonder he could comment on the impovents it has in that cionstext rather than using the analogue?

Thanks
Bill

Bill,

Davehg uses his modded SB3 as a transport only into a DAC.

Here are his comments after just getting his Deluxe PS upgraded with the Jensens

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=26157

I use both of my modded SB2s digital out into Panny's. The HT is a modded SA-XR70 into all VMPS and the bedroom is a stock SA-XR55 into a pair of Onix X-LT with the X-SUB.

It is very easy to hear the difference in power supplies in either of those two systems. The stock supply sounds harsh on the top end, very poor separation and loose boomy bass that is not extended at all.

Changing to a linear supply removes the harshness from the high end and tightens up the bass. Going to Jensens extends the bass to sub-sonic, separation and image increase and mids and highs are just more "natural".

This is exactly the same thing we have heard when we compared different PS through the analog outputs: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=24454

Hi Wayne

Thanks for confirming what I already suspected.  When the time comes I have no problem paying for the more expensive supply.

Thanks
Bill

Hard for me to believe that an upgraded power supply would make such an improvement in the performance of an SB3. I've got a stock SB3 runnung into a GR Research DAC 60 with sonic craft mods. No complaints about anything here. Bass, vocalists, instruments are the best I've heard in my system. But Hey!! What the hell!! I'll probably order the ultimate power supply from Wayne. Yo Wayne!  When will you be taking orders?

                 Cheers

It shouldn't be hard to believe. Modifiers have been upgrading power supplies forever.

Maybe Wayne doesn't have the name recognition of Modwright, but I'm pretty sure Dan's been tweaking power supplies for quite some time with few (if any) unhappy customers.

Have you seen Wayne's scope pictures on the difference between the supplies? - I have no doubt the removal of all that grunge will be audible.

Thanks

Hi Rod.

Nice to hear from you again.  Check out

You can do the math.

When it comes time for me I will get one and send it off to Wayne for a mod and get a new power supply.  From what I am reading that combo will easily beat stuff costing much more.

Thanks
Bill
