Can I use this PS in the SB3?

Dumb question... know nuttin' about da juice.

Recently changed ISPs so now have a DSL modem that is not being used. it came with a 12V PS. The lableing reads (among other things):
CLASS 2 POWER SUPPLY
OUTPUT 12V DC 1000mA

OK to use on my SB3? The input plug fits btw.

It will be OK as long as you don't mind burning up your Squeezebox. The SB requires a 5V DC supply. Also make sure that the polarity on the connector is correct since they aren't standardized.

OK, also found some others, closest I came are:
6 V DC, 2.1 amp
and
4.5V DC 200mA

Polarities match.

I am trying to see if it makes a difference in SQ, going to a heavy/large TF. Does it need to be precisely 5 or is there any small variance allowed?

Else if someone could recommend a purchase that would be great. The eBay deal is long gone.

What's your budget? There are lots of posts on this subject here and at the Slim Devices forum. Tomorrow, I'll be receiving an Acopian PS and another, more exotic one. The Acopians go for at least $120. I believe Elpac and Jameco have 5 v power supplies from $13 to $35+/-. I have not tried these, but definitely want to get rid of my stock PS.

Hi Kck,

can appreciate your dilemma. The quick and easy answer is put a 1A diode (1N4004 will do) in the + lead pointing at the SB3 on your 6V supply (bind it up with insulation tape) and you will likely have 5.3V and it should sing!

Nick B, budget is perhaps in the $20-40 range for now I suppose. I would think/hope this is before the returns slope starts flattening out. Thanks for the Jameco name; it was not familiar to me. BTW, what is the ELPAC sku of the plug-n-play unit? I searched and searched but obviously not well enough, 'cos I remember reading it here.

amplifierguru: Thanks for the tip. It's kinda greek to me what you said, but I'll see if the RatShak guy can decipher it. There used to be a pretty technical guy at my local store but I suspect he has moved on. Meantime, if easy to explain this, would be obliged if you did so. Thanks!
