Bryston 9 gauge speaker cables....Do you like them?
« on: 21 Jan 2006, 06:50 pm »
Hi,
I am considering purchasing the Bryston 9 gauge speaker cables to connect to my PMC IB1's.I was wondering what you thought of these cables.I would need about 14' or 15' lengths. They would cost about $150.00 U.S.

Is there anything else I should consider.I probably will not be able to audition  them.

At present I am using 14 gauge copper Home Depot yellow jacket cable.Would I notice a big difference?

One more thing, should I entertain Bi wiring?

 Thanks for your help!

$150USD is not bad for a pair of Bryston speaker cables.  Bi-wiring is great if you are bi-amping.

xsparky,

Opinions vary on the audibility of speaker cable differences.  I am talking about cables without trick networks or other electronic filters to tweak the sound. As far as the latter go, you are far better off with an equalizer.  I do not hear differences among non-trick cables of adequate wire gauge.

As to Bryston speaker cables, I had a pair and was very happy with them. Recently I changed them for another similarly priced brand with a black covering, because I needed longer cables and I wanted them to vanish on the dark wood floor.  I can't tell the difference, audibly.

By the way, I am not deaf!  I hear plenty of differences among speakers, even among many electronics, and especially acoustic differences among rooms. For years, I played the flute in school bands and orchestras, and I'm an avid music fan.  I just say that because it might put it more in perspective when I downplay cable differences.

I think the Bryston cables are fine products.

I wouldn't bother with biwiring. Any audible change is sure to be less than moving your listening position by twelve inches.  Why not spend the dough on more music?

Have fun!

I'm using double 4 foot runs of the Bryston cable between 7B-SSTs and Spendor S8es. I like the cable -- quality cable, solid quality connectors, reasonable price.

I played the cable game for a while and determined that many cables do have an audible affect, but it's a very expensive way to season the sound to one's taste. I've adopted the attitude that if it's good enough for recording studios, then it's good enough for my home.
