Some Basic questions (RM30 speaker placement)
« on: 1 Nov 2005, 04:08 am »
Is it true that ribbons are no good for a humid climate like here in Singapore?  Don't seem to have a dealer here. You guys are so lucky.  I am thinking of a RM30, but a bit taken aback of the numerous numbers of tweaks and postioning trials and errors.  Not very knowledgable in that respect.  More a music lover than an audiophile,  but my 15 yrs old JM lab needs replacing and looking for a replacement.   :?

That's pure hogwash. I live in a very humid climate in the Northwest. You don't need to worry about tweaks, they're great right out of the box. Any speaker from any company though should be placed in the room where it sounds best and this takes some experimentation but is free. This is the best tweak btw.

Also there's no reason that planars would be a problem in a humid climate. Maybe electrostatics may have issues. Planars have a very inert diaphram like polypropylene that I doubt is affected by moisture even if you poured water right on it. The tracings on it I think are aluminum but that should be no problem indoors.  If you want one of the best speakers made in that price bracket then you found a great one. Please don't think I say this because I recently became a dealer a few months ago. I've been telling people for years that in any price category from 2,000 on up that the Vmps line should at least be heard before purchasing.  If you hear them after you buy something else you could end up with buyers remorse.

Cheers

I live in Tallahassee FL. Here is the average humidity rating:

It is one of the highest in the US but I do not know how it compares to Singapore. My VMPS speakers do just fine.

I just came back from the subway.  Have to walk today as car is down.  My T shirt is soaking wet.  We are mostly more than 90% year round with some dry afternoon maybe hitting 70-80%.  I was told some ML owners keep their speakers in air conditioned room,  24 hours a day, year round.  Huge electrical bill!

VMPS speakers are not sensitive to humidity.

Hi guys

More basic questions.  Will you place RM30 like this

Cardas
http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=insights&content_id=26&pagestring=Room+Setup

or like this...

Immediasound
http://www.immediasound.com/Speakersetup.html

Was told that the Cardas method is more suitable for big Floorstanders with more LF response, whereas the Immediasound way is more suitable for bookshelf speakers.  The RM30 looks a lot like the Audio Physic Virgo....so is the Immediasound way better?   :?

I like the Immedia setup, but you should experiment with various placement schemes in your room.  It's part of the fun of setup and adjustment.

I went the Cardas route with good results, but I'll have some time this week to try the Immediasound approach.

RM30S has arrived!
My pair has finally arrived.  In fact, 14 days already :D   Simply can't tear myself from them to post.  Really amazing speakers.  I can't believe that I actually bought it without first listening to it.  I was so worried at my hasty decision.  When it first arrived and set up,  my worries turned to anguish!  Put in my faithful Mahler 5 where the first 10 seconds of the 1st movement decides for me if I like a particular speakers.  Disaster!  When the big wham came,  excuse me,  the speakers sort of like give a "fart".  Another friend of mine who bought at the same time have only good reports.  It is so disheartening...  On the second day,  the "fart' has started to loose up a bit,  and on the third day,  can say that the speaker has reached his potential.  OK, I knew it still not fully run in...but my non-audiophile ears don't reveal dramatic differences from day 5 onwards.  Just played Tchaikovsky Symphony No 4 earlier... plucking of strings in 3rd movement is so vibrant and uncannily real... and into the last movment....the speed and attack took my breath away...compared to the first day, it was so slow and unresponsive.. phew!  I don't know what I am typing.. just have to go back to my music... :D

I think my vmps speakers coninued to improve for 6-12 months.  And that is with a lot of use during that period, both audio & video.

I am in agreement.  They seem to sound better and better every day for almost the first year.  After a few tweaks, my 626r's are now absolutely stunning performance-wise.  I have had my speaks for almost a year now, and couldn't be happier.

I'll second that!

With my seconding the first proposal, this officially marks the start of the "Stop the Scott-boycott!" campaign.
