Guys, I'm nervous ...
« on: 13 Jan 2006, 12:57 am »
I want to upgrade. I love music. But I'm nervous.

On the one hand, I read these G-R-E-A-T reviews about the $1500 system.

On the other, I can't get any information about what the "$1500 system" actually comprises from the web site and a request for printed info has yielded nothing. And, still, I research, and I'm thinking the "$2200 system" alluded to in a response to a review might suit better.

But there's nothing on the web and nothing in writing.

Sure, Klaus called me on a Friday night and I had questions. He really sounds nice, but this lack of anything that I can see (let alone hear) has me nervous.

Maybe for some of you plunking down $2200 for audio isn't a big deal. I just finished putting a kid through George Washington and I work for a university myself. This system - whether it's the $1500 or $2200 version - will probably last me to the grave.

I need convincing - $1500 or $2200. What's it gonna be? In short, help.

$1500 if you want a monitor speaker, $2200 if you want floorstanders.

Included: Etesian passive pre, Khartago stereo amp, interconnects and speaker wire, speakers.  You will need to add a source (CD player).

Both are pretty darn good for the money.  If it were me, I'd eat PB&J for a few months to get the $2200 system.

Odyssey also offers an awsome $4500.00 system with the Stratos stereo amplifier, Tempest preamplifier and the Lorelei loudspeakers and Groneberg cables. if you can swing it it is the best bang for the Buck around. thanks....WCW III

If there is one Achillies heel to Odyssey, that is it.  Little information available on the web or in print.  There is nothing to comfort you other than reviews, forums and talking to Klaus.  I, too, was leary at  first of the whole thing.  After reading all the reviews I thought I'd try and upgrade my amp to a Stratos.  I saw a used one on a-gon that sounded too good and call Klaus about it.  He set me straight on it and before long had me buying a new one for slightly more than the used one.  Next thing I know I'm calling asking if he can upgrade it to a Stratos Extreme, next thing I'm buying Lorelies, next thing I send the Stratos in for Mono Extreme treatment and buy another Mono Extreme.  Then I'm buying TS-Premium cabling for the whole system.

It kinda happens that way with Odyssey.  You have to make up your own mind, but I don't think you'll be dissapointed if you do, and, after all, the 30 day trial applies to the $1500 / $2200 system doesn't it?  You have very little to lose and MUCH to gain!

Where are you located?  Maybe someone with Odyssey gear could invite you for a listen?

But I'm nervous.

Don't worry, you're in a good hand when buying audio equipments from Klaus. He will make sure that you're happy with his gears.

Like Byteme, I started out with reading the review from Soundstage and bought a used Stratos amp & Tempest preamp, then upgrade to a dual mono Stratos, and finally to an pair of Extreme Mono and Extreme Tempest. However, I sold my Tempest recently because I want to introduce a tube preamp into my system. As you can see, it will never stop.... This hobby is an addiction.

I haven't heard either system but I can say that you cannot go wrong with Klaus.  He offers better customer service than I have ever seen and the gear is top-notch, particularly for the price.  I took a different route than many of these guys--I read a ton of reviews and bought the extreme Monos and Tempest straight away--much cheaper that way since that is where many end up anyway!

SamA,

I go back to serial #33! (basic Stratos at the time)...today among other gear I have a pair of Mono Extremes as seen in my avatar...everyone is happy, the rest is history. As to the future, Klaus is a bag full of surprises ... stay tuned!

Thanks,

Can't go wrong w/Odyssey.  Klaus is one of the best, and his gear offers great bang for the buck.

Agree w/Rob, save or starve to get the $2200 system, imo, a much nicer speaker.  And by the time you add $100/200 for speaker stands the difference obviously isn't as great.

Best of luck.

Jeff

Watch out man.

Either system will only wet your wistle into this Audio thing.

I have the Khartago and Etesian combo driving Chapman T-7 speakers.

I love my gear, but now feel like I can somehow find a way to move up to the Monos or Extremes.  You may get caught the the sweet song on the Sirens, beware.

You will love either system.  I Do you have any gear now?  If so sell everything except the speakers and get the electronics and add speakers when the $$ permits.

Guys, Thanks for your generous replies. Very encouraging and the information helps a great deal - especially when one cannot see, feel or hear a fairly significant investment before purchase.

My listening area is 12 x 14 and, since I've been using a nice pair of Boston Acoustics A150s, I think the advice to go with the Nightingales is solid.

Typically, what is the lead time for an order?

I think the average time is 2 weeks. Klaus likes to take this time to force you into submission into waiting on your front porch ready to pounce on every UPS truck that goes down your block.  :P
