tell you what, you are always loaning stuff to others.  I built 2x pair of some nice speaker cables (8' each, hope that is enough).  I'll terminate speaker end of one pair with speakons and loan both pairs to you so you can A/B it if you want.  All I ask is some comments on whether it made any difference and what that difference was.

I'll explain the cables more in detail in private if your interested.

This speaker gives a good idea of the size of the Speak-on connector.  It's a lot cleaner looking and easier to use than standard connectors.  There is only one connection for everything.  Plus, it's held in firmly. You just push in the little bar and twist to remove the cable.

I don't know much about it either, but it's a common pro-audio connector - and it's GARGANTUAN!

Are we talking about the same thing?  Speak-On connectors are actually very compact and give a great connection.  In these speakers they take the place of three sets of wires and look much cleaner than three sets of binding posts.  For active speakers, they are a perfect choice because you can't accidentally plug the wrong driver into the wrong xover point.

I must be thinking of a different model.  The last time I saw speakons (the same kind of plugs I'm seeing in yours and Bill's pics) I was jacking them into the back of some gargantuan PA monitors capable of eating 1000w for breakfast, so it may have been a different variant.

I should probably post this in another thread but I wanted to reference my actual speakers.  I am thinking about picking up a tube amp or low powered digital amp (battery?) to use on the tweeters of my active system.  

Has anyone out there experimented with a low powered amp in an active system?  At the moment I have a Coda/Legacy amp on the tweeters and mids but would like to play with another option.  Everything sounds great but it would be fun to try something without spending a lot of money.  Want to keep it in the $300-400 range or close.

If you want something only to experiment with...you can try a SI amp run off of a small 12 volt 7ah battery from batterymart.com.  If you want to save on shipping charges...they used to have a store in CrestHill (but I believe they moved to Minnoka).

    Aside from they quick, cheap and easy SI amp...You can also try for a used Norh SE9, an ASL wave8 or something like that.  Should give you some decent highs on a budget.  One of these days I've got to get me one of these little amps one of these days...but there's so many darn other things I've got to buy and build first     Not to mention my listening room has our daughters 9' X 12' inflatable jump and slide thing in it right now.  Looks like I won't be doing much listening until spring time, when we could move it outside...ya gotta have priorities

I'd just go with the regular ones and add different binding post etc if you want.  If you spend $30.00 on the SI t-amp and $10.00 on a battery or walwart you'll have an inexpensive system to power the tweeters in an active system.  Then you could still keep your eyes open for an inexpensive tube amp (like the wave 8 or se9).

   This would get you going right away...and afford another option in the near future for a used tube amp as well.
