SB3 locks up!
« on: 16 Jan 2006, 05:42 pm »
My SB3 has been working flawlessly until I added a bunch of music recently. I just about filled up my hard drive (7.39GB left of 279GB total).  I placed a link to a folder on another drive for more music within the primary folder as well.. Now my SB3 finds everything and starts playing any song chosen but it locks up after a few seconds, stops playing, stops responding in any way, and I have to unplug it to get it to work again. Anyone have any ideas about what the problem is and how to fix it?

I removed the link to the other drive, I rescanned my library, I've gone into settings and increased cache size and turned off artwork. I've even Defragmented my HD's. No success yet. Next I'm thinking of removing some albums from my primary music file to free up some memory on the HD. I remember reading that you shouldn't totally fill up your HD but I figured 7GB of free space was plenty.

Any help would be appreciated because I can't go back to playing CD's again. :)

Joe,

Do you have another SB (like an SB2)?  If so, does it work (preferably using the same settings as the other SB)?  I think the first rule of debugging is to start with something you know works.  Create a directory with a small amount of songs (say, 10).  Then change slimserver to use that directory.  Does this work?  If you use the same drive, and this works, then you know it's not related to the drive being full.   Perhaps you've run into some limit in slimserver/squeezebox concerning how many songs you can have.  By the way, that's a lot!

That's a good idea Bob.  I do have a SB2 that I can try but since the only change has been filling up the Hard drive, I figure this is a memory problem. I posted my question on the Slim Devices forum as well.

Joe,

I wouldn't doubt it's a memory problem -- that's a lot of memory!  ;-)  How do you back that up, by the way?

What makes you think it is a memory problem? Having a full HD does not really effect memory.

I've had the same problem occur when trying to play songs in WMA format. Converted them to MP3 and the problem stopped.

I'm starting to think that the new files I've added are corrupted in some way. I'm going to place all the new files in a seperate folder and then link them to the primary folder and see what happens.
My music is backed up by owning the original CD's. My cousin and I are sharing our collections so, if something happens to my Hard drive, I'll just burn his. By the way, my brother wants to join our "club" and will be adding another 500 CD's to the collection. That way, all 3 of us will have the same 1500 CD collection on HD. If one of us loses there drive, the others can reload the data.

Wow -- 1,500 CDs is impressive.  That's a good way to do it, too, as there are three copies of each.

Although 1500 CD's is an awful lot, the truth is that much will never get played at my house. I have many albums that I know I don't like (Rush, Backstreet boys) and much that I've never heard of.

Joe,

Did you resolve this?  Was it a corrupted file?
