WAV vs FLAC?
« on: 21 Dec 2005, 08:45 pm »
i just downloaded EAC and FLAC.exe and foobar. I ripped some tracks on my cd to WAV using EAC and encoded it to FLAC format using FLAC.exe. I listened to both WAV and FLAC on foobar and the WAV is a lot louder than the corresponding FLAC file. Anything im missing? I thought it should sound exactly the same, but i have to turn the volume dial up more significantly playing the FLAC files...

I know there is a way on EAC to rip directly from CD to FLAC..but i couldnt get it to work unless i specified "Compressed" is this the way it should go?

Yep, selecting "compressed" tells EAC that you wish it to compress the ripped WAV files using an external encoder (eg. FLAC). FLAC uses a lossless format, saves approx 20-25% file size, and sounds (according to those who have tested it) identical to the original WAV files.

It doesn't really take any longer, as each ripped track is compressed (FLAC'd) while the next track is ripping.

Not sure about the volume difference, perhaps you selected "normalise" (don't) or "replaygain"?

Unless an error occurs (unlikely) the decompressed FLAC file is bit for bit identical to the wav.

The second link says to rip using the mp3 button on EAC.  Shouldn't you rip it as a WAV file?  I haven't been able to compress automatically using Flac while ripping with EAC. I'll try the settings on the second link you provided and see what happens.

I had the same thing happen when I first tried the FLAC Frontend. It wasn't untill I got around to using it in conjunction with EAC that I got normal volume levels. Have no idea why that would be but I was ready to dismiss it in favor of MP3 as a result.

Once FLAC is integrated with EAC, you hit the WAV rip button to rip and not compress, or the MP3 button to rip to WAV then automatically compress using FLAC (or whatever other encoder you have integrated). It doesn't matter what encoder you use, the second button is always called MP3.

EAC Quickstart Manual

Take a look at the EAC Quickstart Manual at http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac-qs-en.htm.  It shows you how to set up EAC and addresses all of the problems detailed above.  You can also set up profiles that allow you to save various options and routines without having to change settings in EAC each time.  It's a little outdated and not all of the screen shots resemble the latest version of EAC, but it hits on the most significant aspects of setting up and running the program.  I thoguht it was a very handy learning tool.

I like using EAC and then dbpowerconverter because the dbpowerconverter gives the options in such a way every thing is easy and works nice.

FLAC has saved my PC audio efforts with Foobar2000.
