Stratos Monos upgrade
« on: 20 Dec 2005, 04:53 am »
I bought the first generation of Monos when they were first out. I have heard recently that there has been multiple upgrades since. Can anybody tell me if this can be performed and how much it will cost? Also what are the upgrades to the monos since release?
Thanks

You have to call Klaus. Only him can provide you all the detail and pricing. If you haven't talked to him, he is a very pleasant person to talk with.

At a minimum the signal path has been changed noted by the new red circuit board.  Depending on when you got yours there may have also been changes in internal wiring, I believe to all Groneberg Quattro and WBT binding posts.  Capacitor size may also have been upped.

I recently (March '05) got a Stratos Extreme upgraded to a Mono Extreme and purchased another Mono Extreme.  If memory serves the to upgrade the Stratos to current "guts" level it was less than $200 or so.  I don't have any of that info here, but I recall that being the ballpark.

Cost probably depends on the vintage of your original monos. My upgrade was more or less a complete replacement of the internals. At upgrade time the amps were about 3 years old, and the cost for those came to be about $1100 (and money VERY well spent - I doubt I'd be still listening to these amps if I hadn't opted for the upgrade).

I think the biggest changes that I noticed were with control of the bass and mids - equally with an increase in clarity and presence.  There was a noticably bigger soundstage as well.

Not that the stratos ever presented any issue with running out of steam but these seem like they are limitless.  I especially noticed the increase in presence (punch) in home theater use.

In my opinion, there is no comparison between the regular monos and mono extremes.  My NHT 2.5i's sounded a bit harsh with the regular monos.  The extremes are so much more smooth and full bodied.  I can't wait to hook them up to my new Salk's.

Thanks to all for their comments. BTW, has there been an upgrade for the mono extremes since they were first released?

:singing: Hey CS, Awhile ago they switched from green circuit boards to red ones and some of the components on the boards were switched as well.  plitron toroidal transformers also replaced a earlier version that was once used in the Odyssey amplifiers. call Klaus if you are interested in details regarding the specific changes to the Odyssey amplifiers.thanks....WCW III
