Ideal RM30 listening distance?

This is more complicated than the title implies.

My future room will be 33' long.  I can't choose a screen size till I choose the perfect speaker listening distance.  I can't experiment now because my current room is only 17' long.

I usually listen to stereo CD's in PLIIx.  I know, it sucks, but I make believe I like it better.

8.1 system comprises closely spaced RM30C's (or RM30M's) for L-R front mains & no center.  All surrounds sited high close to 8' ceiling: Monopole front side-axis surrounds point toward listeners, highly diffuse side-surrounds & highly diffuse rear surrounds.

All 8 speakers will likely be high-pass crossed somewhere around 80 Hz.  I love the way this increases the dynamic envelope.  My active sub is computer EQ'd & kicks butt.

I know no one has duplicated the above system, but based on your RM30 experience, what is estimated ideal listening distance?

I wonder if the CDWG thingy will change the ideal distance?

Thankx all!

Thaks, Scotty.  Brian's room is long, yes, about 30'.  I can't believe my future room is longer, but it will be, unless I move the back wall to enlarge a room for, uh, shall we say, another family member.

I prefer a closer distance than Brian's.  And B doesn't have a HT rig, yet.  I'm hoping someone with an RM30-based HT will share his experience.

Jim, I've got a 5.1 system of VMPS ribbons (RM30's, RM2's, & LRC). The 30's are about 12' from the sweet spot. They sound really good, but I wish I could push them back further or scoot my seat back. But I have a few thoughts for you. Rather than distance what about angle? I think this is probably more important that distance. How wide is the room? Also how many rows are you planning?
I'm using the 38% rule of thumb for my seating location with the mains ~3 off the front wall.

Jim,

My theater showroom is about 15.5 wide by 21 long and 8.2 or so high.

I have my Rm-30m's left and right about 9 feet from my 1st seating position for two channel. I have the Rm 30 center through a Screen Research acoustic screen with black backing(both THX and ISF certified) with vertical center about 10 ft  and in a arc to the listening postion. I do have the left and right about 30 degrees or so aimed toward my listening position with left to left ear and right to right.

I have the dipoleribbon surrounds to the sides and have the 626r in the rear when I am not using them in a two channel setup.

I sit about 14 feet on the second row (at this position there is about 1 foot cross infront of me of the left and right speaker) and 17 or so on the third row. Second row is perfect for my 100 wide 4 way masking system. Image is just large enough.

I have one larger sub in the front corner and still playing around with the second larger placement.

The sound is amazing with music and movies and imaging just stunning!!! Dialogue is glued to the image and center of screen where is should be.  Can't wait till the CD is ready for the RM-30 and Can't wait to hear them at CES!!!!!

I hope this is making sense since I am doing three things at once :)
