Samsung DVD vs. Oppo
« on: 8 Dec 2005, 01:39 am »
I am helping someone choose a DVD player with digital output (DVI/HDMI). This person has a LCD TV w/HDMI, and a Motorola DVR with HDMI.  Naturally, my first thought was the Oppo, as the Oppo works great for me, especially considering that my PJ has DVI input (and is not HDCP compliant).  However, using all HDMI would simplify the set up considerably for this other person.

From looking at the specs, it would appear that the Samsungs, or a half dozen other brands, should deliver similar PQ as the Oppo.  However, no one is raving about these other players like they are the Oppo.

Does the Oppo outperform similar players by a large margin?  And, if so, would the difference be noticable on a 37" LCD w a native resolution of 1366 x 768?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, John

Yes, the difference would be noticeable on a 37" display. How moticeable I couldn't say as I've not hooked both players up to whatever set your friend has.

The OPPO is the better player if you're using DVI/HDMI. The Samsung is the better player using Component Video.

If you're going to be using HDMI, go for the OPPO.

And if your friend isn't going to use the DVI out on the Oppo, don't let him buy it.  The Oppo only does 480i over component.

Also, the Oppo doesn't have an output that matches the native rate of that monitor, so whatever resolution you choose (480p, 540p, 720p, or 1080i) will be rescaled by the display.

Thanks guys!

Looks like the Oppo is the way to go.

I would guess that the 720P would look quite nice on the  1366x768 display.

Has anyone used the Oppo on a LCD TV with this resolution?  If so, any input would be appreciated.
