Edit video settings on TV, DVD player, or both?

I can edit brightness, contrast, color, tint, and sharpness on both my TV and DVD player (Samsung 27" flat CRT and Onkyo DV-CP802).  I have the DVE Digital Video Essentials DVD.  I don't have the greatest system in the world, but it's servicable and I could use this experience when I get a real job and can afford the good stuff.

I've mostly just tried keeping the TV on "standard" and changing things on the DVD player, but I haven't been satisfied with the contrast levels.  Even on the lowest contrast levels, I still see blooming, though by then, it's too dark.  On the TV, I can edit from 0-100 (I assume 50 is neutral).  On the DVD player, I can only edit -7 to +7.  I thought about starting with everything at 50 and maybe playing around with both the TV and DVD, but that seems complicated.

1)  Should I just leave the DVD settings alone (everything on 0) and only mess with the TV settings?

2)  Also, for the TV settings, what should I leave sharpness at?  It's still 0 to 100.  For my DVD player, it's 0 to 7, so I have it at 0.  For the TV, should it be at 0 or 50?  0 looks... a tad unsharp, but I only glanced at it.

Set the DVD player back to its default or factory picture settings and adjust the TV. Only adjust the DVD player if your TV doesn't have enough adjustment range or if it has adjustments that are not available on the TV.

I've found that I get the best results with Sharpness turned nearly all of the way down.  On my Mitsubishi tv it seems that any sharpness setting causes blurring of the image (and I don't think my tv is defective).   I've noticed this same 'sharpness' issue with other tv's, so it's not just mine. Try it on the ending movie credits where you have white text on a black background.

I agree with Dan that you should side to your tv settings adjustments, and leave the DVD player in a default mode....but only if the DVD player is your main or only source.  If you also watch broadcast tv with your tv then setting the monitor's adjustments solely based on DVE may produce an unsatisfactory broadcast image.  In that case I would first set the tv to a pleasant broadcast image (making sure you don't peg any of the adjustments to one end or the other so as to not make later DVD adjustments that much harder ....if you have to then you have monitor problems), then use your DVD player's adjustments when viewing DVE test patterns, etc.  Either that or write down the tv settings for DVD viewing and adjust them back for broadcast.  This is all a moot point if each input has its own settings memory....if so, go back to our original recommendation...use the tv.
