4B SST Channel

Hi,

As you can see I have a 4B SST and I need advice on what to do.

Firstly I have the amp well ventilated as it sits outside of my rack on a amp stand.  For sometime I had the amp turned on all the time but I noticed a smell and it was really hot so I turned it off.

Recently I noticed that the right channel gets really hot as I can hear the metal expanding. The left side is only warm to the touch.

As I turned the amp on my right channel showed an amber light so I turned it off waited and turned it on again. Again the same thing as I left it on to check my owners manual it turned green but the right side was very hot. I now have a fan blowing on it and so far so good.

Do you guys think it needs to be checked out.

         Many Thanks

         Peter

Hi Peter,

It sounds like the 'bias' needs adjusting on the one channel.

A little more info. I had the fan going and it seemed to cool off the area.
Halfway through the movie I turned the fan off.

The amp did not heat up again. I spoke with Bryston and it was suggested that I unplug all cables and see if it heats up again.

Any suggestion on how long I should keep it turned on.

         Many Thanks

I would send it to Bryston for a checkup.  I know how a pain it is when you have to send your audio gear back for repair or upgrade.  Another consolation for buying from you local dealer is most of the time they have a loaner amp while yours is being repaired. 8)

Thanks for all of the replies. On the advice from bryston I've kept my amp turned on for at least 12hrs and it's as cool as a cucumber.

Even though I bought the amp second hand my dealer is willing to handle it for me if I decide to bring it in.

I am now starting to think that maybe my cables had something to do with it. I'll see when I reconnect them if it warms up again.

      Many Thanks

The other day, my year old 9b-SST that had been powered on all day showed an amber light for one channel which, on inspection, was painfully hot to the touch. I'm only using three of the five channels currently and the one in question isn't hooked to anything. I turned the amp off for 20 minutes or so to cool off. When I fired it up again, everything was fine. I'm waiting for it to happen again before sending it in for service. 20-30 hours later, so far so good.
