Another SACD 1000 on the way!! Take that CE!
« on: 19 Apr 2003, 03:38 am »
After a very long conversation with fellow Eugene OR resident Stan Warren (who has been modding cdps for the last 17 years), I just traded my Jolida cdp for another SACD 1000 from someone who I've dealt with before. Stan will be modding it in the next few weeks and says that it is one of the best cdps that has come down the audio pipeline in a long time. Have a nice day

Congrats!  Good thing you know where SW lives :-)

Rumour has it he has been swamped for months with his mods..how did you jump to the head of the line?!!

Also you might want to have his kids make up some speaker cables and IC's, I haven't heard them, but by reputation they are very good for the $$$.

Stan said that he has been swamped ever since the 399.00 Tweeter special happened earlier in the year-I've had a lot too much alcohol at the moment, so thanks for playing :D

I sincerely hope this is true. I sent him my '1000 last September, way before they went on sale and it took 5 1/2 months to get it back. It does, however, sound very nice. :)

I have an SACD1000 bought last Dec.

Since Stan is too indundated, I'll use that several month que lag time to thoroughly break-in the unit.  Since some claim that it has reliability problems, there is no better way than to run it hard.  Then once it passes the trial-by-fire,  the expensive mods would make more sense.

Actually Stan says he is pretty much caught up on his backlog of players to be modded as of now. He said that when the 399.00 Tweeter specials hit the market, he was working 13 hours a day modding the flood of units people sent to him. He likes the SACD 1000 a lot.

I thought I read the 1000 was replaced by a newer, improved model, for much much less money?  SA963, I see on the Philips website.

Zorkee,
In my mind, Philips never replaced the 1000.  Marantz designed the 1000 when Philips still owned Marantz, while Philips did the 962 and 963 itself.  The 963 does not have the discrete output stage, or two power supplies, like the 1000 does.  However, I never heard a 963, so do not know how it stands up to a 1000.

ETR, congrats.  I think you will be happy with the sound of the SW modded 1000.  I am happy with my player.
However, I am worried now about it's durability.  Friday, I had it playing because I had just made some mods to the power supply (above and beyond what Stan does).  Well it was sitting there, I accidentally bumped it, when I was moving my amp around.  After this, it would not read any CD   .  Cycled power a couple time, and it was OK  :D .  However, later on, found it would not read most hybrid SACDs  .  Thought I was going to have to buy a new player.  But, after leaving it off all night, it worked ok on Saturday :D  :D .
So, I am very relieved, but from now on, I am going to tweat it with kit gloves.  Like I was thinking about taking it to Reference Audio mods one of these days, and comparing it to their modded 1000, but not anymore.  It's not going to leave my house anymore, I am going to try to move it as little as possible, and hope the problem does not come back.
I was planning on making a few other changes to it, will have to think about it, and see if I think it is worth it.  I am very happy with it's sound, and am so relieved it is working now.

It has multiple power supplies.  Philips designs all the stuff for CD players.  Everybody uses their chips, laser assys...etc.  The 963 has 192K upsampling for standard CD.  Switchable, not much difference  on or off, more so on certain CD's.  Discrete output stages just cost more.  New chips are constantly coming out, from Philips themselves.  They can make a tv on one chip!!! tuner, all control ckts....HV may be a separate chip., no need for more components, less is best. Moving it causes a problem, sounds like a bad connector or loose on the ckt board.  that is not a mod is it?  One thing missing is a headphone jack, woth variable control, my two other Philips players have it, why not this one?  SACD has already filtered down into all in one Home Theatre setups from Philips, in a multi changer model..speakers, 700 watt receiver all kinds of features...well under $1,000!!!  The original $2,000 sticker was insane....The 963 works great.  And they will get cheaper and better in one more year, just wait.

I have a Modwright SACD 1000 on the way - can't wait.

It has the Signature Truth Mods, (please see ModWright forum), +Superclock II + Superclock PS +5V Power Regulators.  I was debating between the SCD-1 or the SACD 1000 to have modded, and I chose the SACD 1000.  The problem with the stock SACD 1000 is the gain stage, and of course Dan is completely replacing the gain stage ;).  The SACD-1000 has the same Marantz D/A chips as the flagship SA-14, which have improved specifications versus the SCD-1.  We'll find out soon enough.

Your braver than I am with the reports of failure esp. in the transport/laser area.

Good luck with it.

Marbles,

I'm not worried - I have a boxed up SACD-1000 if the head unit ever needs replacing; the actual work is minimal to replace the transport mechanism.  Furthermore, Philips does have compatible versions of the transport part available for purchase through European distributors.  Also, from the limited feedback available, the failure rate seems to be centered around certain production unit batches - I did what I could to ensure neither of the SACD-1000 units were closely numbered to those with higher failure rates.  Of course, none of this matters if the sound quality isn't up to par.

Congrats.

I had an SACD 1000, and was super happy with it. What exactly was the problem with the gain stage--can you go more into detail on that?

Anyway, I just bought a 963 to use as DVD/SACD player and backup cdp. I wouldn't try to compare the 963 to the SACD 1000. They are two different concepts entirely.

My main rig is now a Shigaraki DAC/Planet 2000 (ttransport). I'll get the Shigaraki transport after summer.

963 vs. 1000
How can they be entirely different concepts?  They are BOTH SACD players? The 963 being cheaper, with better features.  I'm curious, where is the SACD1000 made?  The 963 is made in Hungary.  Why would you not compare the two?

That info is readily available, and has been discussed at several sites. The main differences are with the output stages, chassis, and the power supply.
