Passive Preamp Comments
I have not heard the AKSA amp but can offer a few comments on my experience with a passive preamp.

If the amp has a high enough input impedance (say >50Kohms), the attenuator's resistance is kept low (10-20Kohms) and your source has a relatively low output impedance (<100 ohms), you should have a system that is very resolving and will not lack dynamics.  Of course, the interconnects should also be as short as possible and be of low capacitance.  I own a system like this and think it is very dynamic and resolving.

If any of the impedances are off you could have a very "mellow" sounding system in which case you may be better off with an active preamp to correct the impedance mismatches.

Enjoy the music!

From the above formula, can someone please  tell me if the 55N+ qualifies for the passive approach? Also, my observations have been that it is mostly a recording issue, some music does sound layed back as you mentioned, but some sound just right.

netaron,

here's a thread I started inquiring about pre-amps.  you might find it helpful.

Hi Haron,

Yes, the 55W would be fine in this role!  You could use a 20K pot, or, if you really wanted it quiet (but tougher to drive) you could use a 10K passive attenuator.

I agree with the gentleman from Nebraska.  He's on the money from the POV of attenuator impedances.

Cheers,

Hugh

About all that I have to add here is that if you feel comfortable with going passive now, but not completely sure, you could always go with Hugh's TLP.  This would add a little buffering and small amount of "tube-ness" without adding gain.  You can use a stepped attenuator instead of the pot.
While I have never listened to a system w/TLP, I feel comfortable with understanding what I believe it is designed to do.  Of course Hugh is the one to ask.
Just try not to worry too much.  I remember how I was when I made my passive preamp and how needlessly nervous I was about how it would work.  You and the music will be fine, whichever way you decide to go.
