Changing speaker cones? or change to new speaker?
« on: 5 Nov 2005, 05:52 am »
Hi

Recently,  I notice my antique 15 years old JM Lab Utopia sound has deterioated.  Confirmed by a friend.  Cannot image, and soundstage skewed to left side.  Suspect that one of the cones in the right speakers has worn down.  I intend to change everything in both speakers.  Or should I just change speakers?      What about the cross-overs? Are they the likely culprits as well?  Thanks for any advice.

Hi, my guess is that one of the tweeters is not working. Put your ear up against the drivers while playing music (fairly quietly) and you should be able to confirm. If that is the case, it's possible that the tweeter is blown but it could also just be a wiring problem. You would want to unscrew the tweeter and check/resolder its connections, and do the same for the connections at the crossover end.

There is some differences in the sound from both sides when I put my ears close.  But I never suspect the tweeters.  Only the 2 mid bass cones.  Anyway,.. I will listen again.  thanks!
