New Squeezebox

I ordered a new squeezebox this last weekend taking advantage of their "Fall sale". Just checked their website to download slimserver and found out why they are having a sale:

Call it jumping the gun a little early.  Same happened to me.  Duh, but if one thinks about it, before you know it, there will be yet another SB and another sale, so for whatever it is worth, lets enjoy these boxes.

What gets me though is the fact that the new one might be able to display Asian characters such as Korean and Japanese, something that mine is not able to, so I am stucked with all these weird signs that stand for characters.

I'm going to see if they will make an exchange. I have not received mine yet and am willing to pay the extra for the new one, especially for the better display. I think my 50 year old eyes will be happier.

i think the updated characters are for the new version of slimserver (6.2) and not limited to SB3, so if you install it, update your firmware, and copy some fonts to the slimserver installation directory u'll be able to use this new feature.

i asked for a refund when they had a sale (ordered mine few days before the sale) but sez they can't do refund. they sent me a "squeezebox t-shirt" instead

but if you're willing to pay for return shipping i think u can return it and re-order the new one.

The display is the same for the SB2 & the SB3...  Basically everything is the same save the packaging, dual wireless antennas and a linear power supply for some of the internals (see here).

I think a potential concern w/ the new unit might be the ability to modify it.  Both Wayne's (Bolder Cable) and Vinnie's (Red Wine Audio) mods include (among other things) the addition of some caps that are relatively large.  It is up in the air right now as to whether or not the caps they use for SB2 mods will physically fit in the new stylized case of the SB3.

You're correct, I just checked their FAQ's on the SB3 and it does appear that they are the same. This is from their FAQ's:

The third-generation Squeezebox has a completely redesigned form factor and is functionally identical to Squeezebox2.

Although you compare the two and the SB3 appears to have a much larger display. :|

Got my SB2 and heck with it, I'm going to keep it. What an awesome little device. Very easy to set up and the display is easy to read at my listening distance of about 11ft. Now I just have to try and resist the mods being offered by Bolder Cables and Redwine.
