SST improvements over ST
« on: 14 Oct 2005, 11:59 am »
Sorry to bring this up again.  From the Bryston website:

"Among the advances included in this new SST Series are: Faster, more linear and more reliable output transistors for better high frequency accuracy; doubled filter capacitance for even deeper and better-controlled bass; a new proprietary grounding protocol which eliminates the need for ground-lift switches and reduces system noise; new computer-modeled heatsink profile for cooler operation and longer component life."

James you said the 9BSST has the new output transistors but does not have doubled filter capacitance.  Is it the only one which doesn't?  What about the 3B, 4B, 7B and 14B SST?

Thanks,

Henry

Hi Henry,

Yes  the 9B does not have double the capacitance - with the new outputs we were able to up the power rating though.

Thanks James for the clarification.  In that case would it be reasonable to expect the 3BSST (and above) which does have double the capacitance to sound better than the 9BSST?   i.e. even deeper and better-controlled bass?

Regarding power rating, the 9BST which I've just sold was measured to produce over 150W across all 5 channels.  My 9BSST produces 'only'  144-146W.  So I don't quite understand what you mean about upping the power rating because of the new outputs.  I know both the 9BST and SST were rated at 120W per channel, and later on the SST 'became' 140W but I thought that was just to reflect its true power output more accurately, rather than there being any real increase in power.

HI,

Yes I agree the 3B has more to  offer as a stereo amp then 2 channels of a 9B.

We always rated the 9B ST at 120 watts because the output devices were a little more fragil under heavy load conditions. The new SST devices are far more rugged and therefore no issue with higher ratings into difficult loads.
