Question about shipping speakers
« on: 19 Sep 2005, 07:27 pm »
So I've got a pair of speakers I want to ship.  They're big and heavy.  The boxes have been destroyed by nephews.  Where do I go to have someone build me shipping crates?  I don't think you everyday "mailbox" company is going to help cause these suckers weigh over a 100 pounds apiece.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I haven't shipped speakers this way, but I had a very good experience crating and shipping a 300+lb equipment rack using Craters & Freighters:

I just dealt with shipping 90lbs speakers that did not have factory boxes/packing material. I used PakMail and they did a great job. They are used to shipping furniture and heavy expensive stuff. He uses 3" foam insulation as the inner layer and sandwhiched 1/8" plywood between the foam and outer cardboard. Be sure to insure it for full value though...

Call around to UPS Stores. Some of them use Insta-pack foam (self expanding foam) and will professionally pack the speakers.

Bring the speakers in wrapped in furniture wrap and have the store pack them for you. I have used this service several times on DIY speakers and have never had a problem. The best part is that if they pack the speakers and they get damaged they will pay up without a fight.

If you decide not to use professional packing then go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and get foam sheeting (rigid pink or blue foam in the insulation isle) and cut panels the right size so that the speakers fit tight in the double thick cardboard box.

Again use furniture wrap.
