WOW :!:

Phil,
You must have been working on that post for a while!

As I've stated in the past, I am a former Druid owner & present Definition owner. I can whole heartedly agree with what you are saying about the Zu speaker line. I have been living with my Definitions since April of '04 and every time I sit and listen, I am utterly amazed how they pull you into the music. They are the most relaxing (non-fatiguing) speaker that I have had the opportunity to listen to.

Gotta run!

Wow, fantastic post Phil.  Sean and I are working on the satin, dark-candy-red shade for my Definitions as I write.  I've been in audio for about 20 years, most of it impoverished, and have no direct experience with most of the other designs you list.  But, for the first time in my "career", I feel like I'm truly on the right road.

It's really something.  I went through a period obsessing about cables and vibration isolation and power conditioning and. . .you know, I just don't think about any of that stuff any more.  It feels like I have kept my love for the music and gear, and transcended the common angst.

I will be sad to see the Druids go.  No matter what is coming to replace them, they are Truly Great Speakers and they Should Not Have to Leave.  But, such is life.  My hope as I bounce further out on the branch is the reward is greater than the risk.  Indeed, this risk doesn't feel like much of an chance-taking at all.

Phil,

Quote
People make a living writing audio gear reviews?

Well, there are certainly those who do, but perhaps not to the level of income that you might be used to or aspire to.  I suspect that John Atkinson has done alright, and Harry Peason as well.

Moreover, I was thinking more in terms of doing what you love and loving what you do.

845 vs 211

Hi Phil

You referred a few months ago to 845 tube amps having a very muscular sound character.
I’ve only heard an 845 amp once so far, but along with the ‘normal’ SE  magic, heard that muscular quality (others have called it “rich and meaty”) and love it.

I just acquired a pair of NOS RCA 211s, with a view to getting an amp built with them (I know a few amp builders).

 * How do you think NOS 211s would sound, with appropriate circuit, compared to say contemporary 845Cs ?

Phil,

after reading your thoughts on the Zu line, I again  wish their Druids had been broken in for their  L.A. "tour", so that I could have heard them properly.  I've been looking for something to play big classical for a while.   Based on your live music attendance  alone, you would certainly know what's what.  As an audiophile on top of that, your opinions really speak for these speakers.

FYI,

I spoke with Sean today, and he has confirmed that all of the speakers they will be bringing to the Easton PA show will already be broken in.
