7B SST - order series or parallel?
« on: 19 Jun 2005, 05:40 pm »
I'm about to order a pair of 7BSST amps. I see you can order them in either series or parallel spec. Are these physically two different models? Or is it just a switch on the back to choose an option?

From what I've read so far, it seems series is for above 3ohm, parallel is for below 3 ohm loads.

I will use with PMC IB2, which are about 4ohm, therefore need either the series model, or series switch selection.

Can you clarify the situation please!

Thanks, Paul. :?:

Series would be the standard version. Just order a 7BSST and you will get that version. You can get silver or black and 17" without or 19" with handles faceplates.
The parallel version is to deliver a huge amount of current into very low impedances and is not a switchable thing. It has to be set-up at the factory.

Hi James,

I used to have the SST 4B in black, which I loved. Anyway I wanted to upgrade to the 7B's and I found out that Bryston changed the cosmetics. Personally I don't like the new look! Especially the debossed logo - yuk. I love the old style, so I went for the pro versions instead. The old logo is so much better - more industrial, retro and *individual* looking. The new ones could be lexicon or any other similar brand from a distance, with that debossed logo. Also, the pro versions have the chunky bolts on the handles, which look way better.

Hopefully Bryston won't change the pro look as well, or these will be my last ever new amps. :nono:

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the response. We are leaving the Pro version as is - for those that perfer that cosmetic and also if the amplifiers have to be Rack-Mounted.

James,

Thats great to hear. The pro products should remain the same style forever really. That way they become classic icons, in the same manner as McIntosh - transcending the alternating fashion trends. It also means you will get more repeat business as buyers can add new amps to match existing older units. If you had changed the pro versions as well, I wouldn't have bought any new ones at all, preferring to go for the classic used models instead.

I guess you feel the need for a seperate softer look product to pick up sales from more mainstream shoppers, who care about WAF. However this approach does water down the company brand image a little imho. It somehow makes the company seem less focused to a casual observer. I was never a fan of when Krell ditched their industrial image for girly silver trinkets. I can't help thinking their new gear looks cheap. Who knows, maybe they built them down to a price internally as well? Not a good impression to give out. Teac have recently made the same mistake of following trends too closely. They stopped offering black and now only have silver equipment. I decided against a new vrds for this very reason, so had to buy a used black one instead. The world has enough lifestyle solutions as it is. Rise above it!

Hi Paul,

I think maintaining the 'Classis" look is a valid idea - it was the thought behind maintaining the Model numbers - 4B - etc.

The one thing I have learned though is 'you never know'. The new C-Series look is getting rave reviews from many of our customers and is up for a design award in one market.

What is it up for? "Most wife friendly audio product 2005" ? lol.

Joking aside, I know you can't please everyone all the time. That's why having two parallel solutions is a good compromise.

Maybe Bryston needs to sell user-installable, designer faceplaces. Step away from that Flat black or Shiny silver, and into the world of Electric Blue, Racer Green, Chili Pepper Red...

Hm. OK. Time for a med check. Never mind.
