Potentiometer sources?
« on: 7 May 2006, 07:22 pm »
I need a potentiometer w/ the following criteria:

100k
Rotary
Solder lugs
Linear taper
Panel mount
1/4W or higher
Dual-ganged stereo
Cermet or conductive plastic element preferred
Resistance linearity & accuracy better than 20%

The pot will control the midbass level (70 Hz- 260 Hz) in a two-channel audio system.  Transparency & L-R balance is less critical in this range, but I want to know if something is available better than the Alpha brand carbon composition, 20% tolerance at Mouser.  The stereo control is specified to simplify speaker system tuning.  There are already subwoofer & seperate L-R tweeter level controls.

I'm waiting for a reply from Digikey.

I recently ordered some pots similar to your wish list, except 250K (thorsten's rec) by ALPHA.  I read a bunch of threads on diyaudio about recommended linears and many thought ALPHA were good, and they are cheap and easy to acquire.  iirc, I got mine at mouser.

I am assuming you are going to use it in law-fake config.  I have a similar thought.  I want to find one that is motor driven.  I want to replace my remote controlled pot with a law-faked pot.

I see you know of Alpha.  Hughe (Aspen) is a fan of panasonic pots.

I think the Alpha pots from Mouser are just fine.

Maybe they don't have the snooty audiophile seal-of-approval, but they're going to work just fine for years, and they won't break the bank.  Tracking between sections on the dual linear ones is pretty darn good.

My two cents.

Davey.

Parts Connexion has them as well as Percy (if you can get ahold of him, I have not been able too).

Mr. Destroyer sir,

In my experience Percy answered his phone less than half the time, prefering to do business by mail.  Inverness (his previous location, great motorcycle backroads) is about 30 minutes from me.   BTW, the landscape picture at Percy's website is carried over from Inverness, apparently taken from a ridge overlooking Tomales Bay.

Is that you in your Avatar, or some other interesting fan of big bore hand guns?

Disclaimer: Any resemblance to real people & real situations in the following story is purely coincidental:

I've recently been working in the area of a lake in the neighborhood where I grew up in the '60's (19, NOT 18 you smart-alecks!)

I can only admit this because there is no jeopardy at this late date due to the statute of limitations, & guns were not registerd at that time so I could never ever be associated w/ any particular weapon.  Anyway, I can't believe we did this, but at that time we rode motorcycles over to the above lake w/ a .22 long-rifle bolt-action single-shot, the rifle carried causually in a carry case by the guy on the back of the bike.  A friend owned about 20 snakes, reptiles, an alligator, birds, etc, etc...(he later became a naturalist of course).

These animals needed to eat, so we'd go to the lake & shoot birds & rabbits.  The thing is, sometimes we'd shoot at birds on tree branches.  But those bullets have a long range, & the rise on the opposite side of the lake was barely a 1/4 mile away.  Thank God we never heard of any "accidents" taking place in that vicinity!
