Bryston SP1.7 and universal remotes
« on: 23 May 2005, 09:03 pm »
I'm looking to purchase a Bryston SP1.7, but my other half requires consolidation of my pile of remotes into one convenient device...

Any recommmenations on moderately priced units that can be easily programmed (via download or manufacturer code, not key by key) to control the SP1.7.  I find the Philips, Sony and other web based info woefully inadequate to make this determination.

Thanks for helping.

Depends what you mean by "moderately priced". There's a file which replicates the SP1.7 remote layout on a Philips Pronto that you can download from Bryston's website.

I use the Pronto and have the Bryston file downloaded into it but I mostly use my own Pronto file as I find the interface very easy and I can label the buttons the way I want, the size of them, arrangement on the LCD screen and what they say.  For example, my LD is in the Aux input so my remote says LD for the switching of inputs,  My CD recorder is in the tape loop and my DVD recorder is in the VCR loop so those are labeled accordingly.  I don't need the set-up features on the remote as I can just take out the Bryston remote when I want to do something.  A remote like the Pronto makes it easy to program SP 1.7 function when I'm in the screen for other source devices.  For instance on my SACD player screen, I can raise or lower volume and switch between the 2-channel and 6-channel bypass modes.  If you go to  www.remotecentral.com there's also lots of files and info about remotes.

Phil A and nicolasb:

Thank you for the kind replies.  I probably did not dig deep enough on the Philips site and "forgot" about remotecentral.com.

If I could trouble you for one more thing, which Pronto models are you using?

Thank you again for helping!

I am using the ccf file from the Bryton site on the very first pronto model (I believe it is a T1000) and it works even on that model.

You can load the file into the Pronto development tool and design any UI you like. The file contains all the codes includign the discrete ones for on and off.

Cheers

I have both the 2000 and 3000 (got them both for free with Philips VISA points).  I used the 2000 in the main system until late last summer when I completed the basement and now it is in the basement system.  The 3000 has more capability and better graphics but the 2000 is easier on battery life.

I'm using a Pronto RU940 (as seen in Stargate SG-1 on a few occasions :) ).

Although, not the answer you want to hear (key to key learning) ..... I use an MX-500 ($100USD) by Universal Remote Control.  It has hard buttons which I prefer over LCD type remotes that I used.  The MX-500 has a ton of pre coded stuff but none for the SP 1.7.  I did the learning thing - took about 5 minutes and only programmed the buttons I usually use.  I also programmed the discrete power off into the MX-500 which is not available as a button on the SP 1.7.

Thanks for the prior help.

I picked up a used 1.7 on Audiogon and a Pronto NG remote...but I am unable to find the downloadable codes file on the Bryston site.

Can someone please help a chowderhead and a nincompoop with a url.

Many thanks.

The ccf file used to be a link at the top of the SP-1.7 product page with the old web site. I can't find it now either.
