Hi guys,

   I'm trying to get my AKSA100n+ finished and running before my second child is born.  But he could be coming any day now...so I've got little time.  Well...from a day to twelve days.

   I'm running thru the N+ testing instructions.

   1=left channel   2= right channel

   The voltage across R26/R27 are
  1=4.6V/4.6V   2=7.3V/7.3V

  Rails are
   1=+48V/-48V   2=+48V/-48V

  fuses removed, offset
  1=49mV   2=76mV

  fuses in and P2 adjusted offset
   1=0.0V   2=0.0V

   R5/R6 junction voltage
(I'm not sure if I'm measuring in the correct spot or not...as I don't see where R5 and R6 come to a junction.  I've looked on the PCB layout and on the schematic.  I must be looking at something cross eyed???)

  I measured at the extension leg of R6and got 47V (rail is still 48.3) on both #1 and #2.

  I also measured at the R5 resistor and got .831 for both #1 and #2.

   I haven't gone any further, because I figure if something needs to be re-done.  I would be better off waiting.

  thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Dan,

Your electronic baby is perfectly happy......  Offset with fuses in is just fine, that's the acid test, and all the rest is mere bagatelle.  You can measure the voltage across R7 (2K2) and it should be around 18.2V;  R8 (3K3) should be around 27.4V.  If these voltages are correct, then all is hunky dory.....

We look forward to news of your second born!

Cheers,

Hugh

:D

   SHe's burning in!

  AKSA amp number two is close to being done.  Just need to button it up after it burns in a little more.

  It'll still take a little time...but I'm excited to use my AKSA25n+, AKSA100n+ and probably my Cary in a tri-amp config with the DEQX-p.

   Oh...no sign of our expected baby boy yet...so we made it :D

  thanks again for the quick response Hugh...as always, it has been a pleasure

Well...it's run in...tested and all buttoned up :D

  I wish I had taken pictures before I closed everything up.  I've got some HUGE EI low regulation rectifier transformers in there...and there is absolutly no room...anywhere.  Everything is on top of everything else.  Surprisingly there is absolutly zero hum detaectable on 95db speakers with my ear right next to the cones.

   oh...it's sounding darn nice too, Hugh.  Of course...you already knew that it would ;)

  thanks,

 dan

Dan,

Congratulations!!  Very good effort, a lot of work and patience........ :evil:

I have to admit that hum is always the final frontier.  You must have got the earthing exactly right;  it's a tricky, arcane art, and particularly when you squeeze big trafos in it can be a real bitch.

Zero hum deserves the biggest congratulations of all!

Cheers,

Hugh

Hi gonefishin,

Can you give me the details of these transformers (PM me, if you like)?  Redoing the power supplies and transformers is the next upgrade to my 100w/55w/25w AKSAs.

Thanks,

Andy

hehe...thanks guys.

   I think I may have just gotten really lucky with the hum issue.  Although I did used the shielded Volex power cords and shielded interconnect wired straight to the amp boards.  Oh, I also put a shield around the ac wires going from the transformer to the power supply circuit board.  Last, when I was laying out the components inside the enclosure...I tried to keep the magnetic field from the transformers away from everything else inside.

   Since I've got just a little bit of hum from my AKSA25n+, I'm going to try all of the above on it as well.  These amps are powering the midrange in my tri-amped speakers...and the midrange comes in at 106db.  So if I could knock the little bit of hum down to these...I'll be surprised :o

   Hi Andy,

    The transfomers I used in both of my AKSA25n+ and AKSA100n+ are both rectifier transfmorers from Signal transformers.  I used the 36-2 in the 25n+ amp and a dl68-4 for the 100n+.  They don't seem to have a stocked model for the AKSA55n+.  I didn't want to pay for a custom transformer, so the AKSA55N+ that I'll be building for my brother has a toroidal trans.

   Both amps do sound good.  But I would suspect that the toroids would sound good as well.  On my first amp (the 25 Watt version) I used the rectifier trans.  So, when it came time to build my 100 Watt version...I wanted to stick with the same type of transformer, just in case there was a slight difference in sound charactor.

    But let me say...the transformers for the 100Watt are large and heavy!  If I had to do it all over again...I would strongly consider the nice little toroids. :)

    I suppose I'll find out if there are any differences once I get my brother 55n+ done.

Hi guys...still no baby boy.  But wow is this new DEQX tri-amped horn system sounding good.  So far I've only got a quick set up with the DEQX preamp.  But it's very impressive so far.  When I mean a quick set-up, I mean two days worth.

    The AKSA's are really sounding nice :D
