"Memoir of a Snail" is a coming of age story about Grace Pudel (pronounced Puddle) voiced by Sarah Snook.
A very adult bittersweet memoir, Grace is melancholic woman who is a hoarder of snails, romance novels and guinea pigs. Grace’s life is marked by misfortune and loss. After their paraplegic former juggler father dies, Grace and her brother Gilbert are placed in separate foster homes in Canberra and Perth. Overwhelmed with loneliness Grace withdraws into her shell, much like her beloved snails, until an elderly eccentric woman called Pinky comes along and strikes up an unlikely friendship.

"Memoir of a Snail" is a tragicomedy but is not a sad film, there is happiness and always a feeling of hope (but not too much) with a surprisingly touching conclusion. Writer/directer Adam Elliot won an Academy Award for "Harvie Krumpet" and a nomination for "Memoir Of A Snail."
The stop motion claymation characters have true emotions and the set design is dense and beige (green and blue were banned from the color palette). Shot frame by frame over 5 years, the film contains no CGI; every prop, set and character is a real, tangible object.
The screen shot below has illustrates Grace’s massive collection. Between 5,000 and 7,000 snail-related items were physically created for the movie, the entire film crew was involved in making all the items. Each one of the tiny items in the background had to be hot glued onto the set. Setting up this single moment took the team an entire day of work. Writer/director Adam Elliot limited the materials used for the props to paper, clay, wire and paint. There's no fabric in the film. The guinea pig fur was hundreds of individual pieces of wire. Grace’s dress is hand-painted.
